Natural products with betel leaf extract win high scores for Management and Science University (MSU) at UNIMAS Innovation and Technology Exposition in Kuching, Sarawak

Natural products form one of twenty core research interests of Management and Science University (MSU). At the recent Innovation and Technology Exposition (InTEX18) organized by UNIMAS in Kuching, Sarawak, a natural antifungal cream innovation called Dermacol bagged MSU a gold medal along with the highest mark in the Medical category.

The cream’s antifungal betel-leaf ingredient proves an effective inhibitor of the fungus Trichophyton rubrum, which manifests on skin, hair, and nail in fungi infections. Dermacol had won another Gold at the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) organized by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS). The product was formulated by MSU International Medical School (IMS) researcher Dr Muhd Ridzuan Pauzi, who also bagged a Silver for MSU in the Medicinal and Life Sciences category at InTEX18.

The second medal was for a betel-based hand sanitizer called Betelnizer. Significantly lowering costs by the high percentage of alcohol it substitutes, the product simultaneously raises potential commercial demand for betel leaf’s local crop cultivation. Before the InTEX18 silver, Betelnizer had won a Gold at the Research and Innovation Week Terengganu jointly organized by UMT, UniSZA, and TATiUC.
