Environmental sustainability campaign opens university academic year
Community engagement by faculties and schools to drive year-long green consciousness action plans of Management & Science University (MSU)
A healthy environment is conducive to learning, and environmental health is a shared responsibility. Management & Science University (MSU) frontlines the MSU Environmental Sustainability Campaign (MESC) 2016 with community outreach, and launches MESC 2016 ahead of Malaysia’s National Environmental Day.
Activities planned for MESC 2016 include My Coral 2, which will revisit and build on the groundwork laid: corals planted on custom-built steel frames to jumpstart an artificial reef on the seabed of Redang Island. My Coral Eco-Marine Expedition and My Coral 2 are programmes by the MSU International Medical School (IMS). Carrying on their water theme will be the Basic Water Filtration System and Conservation programme for the community of indigenous people in Janda Baik, Pahang, led by the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS).
The theme of recycling will be picked up by the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) and the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA). FBMP will lead the Recycle: Innovation for Sustainability programme involving the MSU Campus and its surrounding community, whereas SHCA will showcase handicrafts modeled on Malaysian icons and made from recycled materials in a Malaysia Truly Asia Souvenirs exhibit. Designated Shah Alam backstreets and alleyways are set for a sprucing up with murals depicting Malaysian flora and fauna in the G-Backstreet Painting programme, a collaboration between the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE) and Shah Alam local council MBSA.
Behaviour contributes a huge percentage of the world’s carbon footprint and values learned from young leave a lasting impact, which is why kindergarten and primary schoolers are in for fun interactive treats, learning all about green energy and non-biodegradability, respectively. The Energy Conservation Awareness Campaign for pre-schoolers will be run by the School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS), whereas a competition centred on non-biodegradability for primary-school children will be run by the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS).
Officiating MESC 2016 was the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dato Seri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who applauds MSU for proactivity in driving the cause for the environment. MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid expresses hope that MESC 2016 will pave the way to nurturing a first-class attitude among students and the public at large towards environmental conservation. Management & Science University (MSU), a forerunner of progressive ideas and proactive action, is going green before the green goes.
