Student chefs wow international judges at annual Asian Food Festival
Battle of the Chefs awards gold, top prizes to culinary, patisserie arts students of Management & Science University (MSU)
There is no better way to hone one’s craft than by continual testing of skills and knowledge, and competitions are just the thing to raise the bar. The adrenaline-pumping thrill that comes from racing to a time limit brings creative chops to the fore, and ultimately, personal bests in competitors. Management & Science University (MSU) sent a team of students from its Culinary Arts and Patisserie Arts programmes to Battle of the Chefs (BOTC) 2016.
BOTC’s tightly-contested Teh Tarik Challenge pulled in the cheers from spectators and a Gold Medal for MSU. Teh tarik, a milk tea concoction owing its name to the action of ‘pulling’ the drink into frothy smoothness, is the nation’s all-time favourite beverage. To be crowned champion of this particular challenge speaks mugs of the skill displayed by winner Mohamad Taufiq Misza Mohamad Isa.
Yet another top prize was claimed by the MSU team for Uniform Bravo in the Waiter Race Challenge. The 90-strong troupe made a resounding success of their BOTC 2016 experience, finishing third overall with 83 prizes - silver medals for Fruit Carving, Sweet Sensation Dessert, and Surabi Malay Traditional Cuisine, bronze for Fruit Carving, Wedding Cake, and Two-Tier-Cake Decoration, and diplomas. With the MSU name high up on the winners list and their personal bars raised, the future chefs are gung-ho for their next creative challenge in the culinary circuit.
