Foundation in Biological Science & Health Science

Introduction

Foundation in Biological & Health Science is designed to prepare students who wish to pursue their career in Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy. The country’s economic growth has given a large impact on the health system in Malaysia and the increase in the nation’s growth has demanded the need for quality health services. Thus, this programme is offered in line with the government’s policy to increase the quality of services in the biological and health science sector which currently concedes with Malaysia’s Vision 2020 by combining the knowledge, technology, skills, community and humanity skills.

With the emergence of new hospitals in the government and private sector, the need for trained workers in the field of medical technology is critical. Subjects like Health Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and Basic Genetics taught to the students will prepare them for problem-based learning for their higher education in local universities or abroad.

Objective

The objectives of this program are:

1. To expose students with science process skills to assist them in making critical and analytical decisions in the classroom and the laboratory.
2. To encourage active learning compared to rote learning by using various teaching techniques such as visualization.
3. To produce students that are knowledgeable in the biological and health science field.
4. To generate students that are able to apply their knowledge of health science in their work.
5. To produce students who are geared towards technology and research so that they can further their studies in the areas of biological and health science.

Learning Outcome

Upon completion of this programme, students should be able to:

1. Apply science theory in their daily lives.
2. Communicate as a scientist while recording, analyzing data and making conclusions based on theories learnt.
3. Develop communication skills that will be an advantage to them in the future while working in medical and research groups.
4. Gain sufficient basic knowledge to prepare them for higher level education in the field of medical science.

Duration

One year, 3 full semesters.

5. Psychology
6. Health Science
7. Basic Anatomy and Physiology
8. Basic Genetics

Progression

Upon completion of the Foundation programme, students may choose to do a Bachelor degree programme of their choice at MSU or progress to higher level education at foreign universities under the International Students Exchange Programme (ISEP) which is a unique joint venture between MSU and its partner universities in countries like UK, USA, Australia, South Africa, Czechoslovakia, India and Indonesia.

Students may progress into Bachelor degree in Medical Science, Biomedicine, Bioinfomatics, Pharmacy or Food Service Technology at MSU.

Entry Requirements

1. Candidates will have to pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM or SPMV) examination or equivalent with credits 5 (FIVE) subjects that are:
   1. Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science and any other 2 (TWO) related subjects
      1. Chemistry and Biology
         
         AND
         
         
2. Diploma Pengurusan from PTPL students who have other qualifications other than ones stated, may refer the matter to the University Senate.

Fees Structure

Your investment for a full time programme is RM12,000 (Tuition fees). Students may apply for MSU and other financial assistance.
