Bachelor in Education (TESL) (Hons)
Introduction:
The Bachelor in Education (TESL) is geared towards producing teachers of English for secondary schools. We start by offering key courses in language proficiency, linguistics and education. These courses allow students to develop a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching English. The course finishes with the practicum, a capstone 14 weeks as teacher in a secondary school.
The MSU-BTESL programme differs from other TESL programme in the country because we emphasize the acquisition of soft skills such as using ICT, communication skills, public speaking, developing leadership skills, developing critical thinking and problem solving. It is these soft-skills that allow 95% of MSU graduates, on average, to get a job within six months of finishing their course.
Prospective graduates can come into our programme by joining the BTESL programme directly or by doing a Diploma in TESL and get credit exemptions. Diploma students who join our programme can get a maximum of 10 subjects exempted.

FAQs:
"Does BTESL allow graduates to develop their fluency in the English language? "
No - Students who join BTESL are supposed to be already fluent. Most of the course focuses on how to teach English rather than helping students improve their English. However, there are opportunities for students to continuously improve their English in specific courses.
"
How theoretical / practical is the course?"
The beginning of the course is theoretical. In the last semester though, students have to complete a 14 weeks practical in a secondary school. For many students, that is the best part of the programme.
"Is being an English teacher a good career?"
The reality is that teachers of English teachers are rare. First, you need to love children. Second, you need to love to teach and, third, you need to love the English language. However, if you have all these qualities, you will find that you will be appreciated wherever you are.
"Can I teach English at University?"
Normally, after completing your BTESL, you will NOT be allowed to teach in a university straight away. However, the BTESL will allow you to enter a Masters programme and from there a PhD programme. However, none of this is possible without a good result in your BTESL"
"What does it take to succeed in doing the BTESL?"
At MSU, we want to build a generation of graduates that are professional, ethical and independent. We always advise our students to set clear goals for themselves and manage their time effectively. With those two characteristics, being successful in doing the BTESL is straightforward.
