Diploma of Hospitality & Tourism Management

Introduction:

The Diploma of Hospitality & Tourism Management is a diploma academic program that leverages on a unique learning opportunity in the combined disciplines of hospitality, tourism and management. Students pursuing the programme will be exposed in the 'know how' and 'hands on' training in both the hospitality and tourism areas of practices. As such, graduates of the programme are expected to be competent to handle the common hospitality and tourism practice as well as becoming the forefront supervisors and lower level managers that are able to advice on routine decision making process of the job scope.

Conducted over the period of two-years on a semester basis (four long and three short semesters), where students will major in hospitality, tourism and management areas. Given such academic exposure, graduates of the Diploma of Hospitality & Tourism Management, therefore, would be in an advantage position to find career opportunities not only in the government sector, but more importantly, in the private and corporate sector. As for the latter career opportunities, graduates are most encouraged to further their study to degree and masters level.

Core Subject Description:

o Intro to Hospitality - Tourism Industry - This course introduces students to tourism industry and understands the structures of the industry. Emphasis is on identifying, understanding, background of the tourism industry and benefits of the industry. For evaluation and effectiveness of teaching and learning process student will experience a tour to tourist destination in Malaysia.

o Tour Operation Management - This course gives student the insight of tour operation by tour companies and their importance in tourism industry. For the purpose of evaluation and effectiveness of teaching and learning process student are expected to plan and handle tour package to selected tourist destination.

o Recreation Practices - This course gives student an exposure to plan and manage recreational activities through the familiarization trips organized. First aid and safety and control procedures are also taught to prepare student during emergency.

o Tourism Geography - This course provides an essential knowledge on tourism geography from a travel industry perspective. The information that student acquire about traveling, destination, lodging and tourism activities of selected world destinations will be a valuable tools when matching tourist and destination.

o Front Office - This course introduces student to the roles and functions of various department in Front Office. Operational skills on handling day to day operation will provide student with techniques of handling tourist at the front office counter.

o Housekeeping - This course introduce student to the role and functions of housekeeping department. Student will be exposed to the practical side of housekeeping which involve handling linen, housekeeping and cleaning devices.

o Intro to Food Service - This course is designed to equip learner with useful knowledge about the concept of management, which is also to make the learner be able to identify the crucial elements involved in the successful operation of a restaurant, and show their interrelationships. Moreover, a restaurant manager brings together three elements: customers, the operation (consisting of food and beverage items as well as the physical facility), and employees. The operator's task is to manage these elements to produce satisfied customer. How to do this is the thrust of this course.

o Restaurant Operation - This course gives student an exposure on planning and managing restaurant's operation. It includes theoretical and practical aspect of managing kitchen and dining area of a restaurant under the supervision of a lecturer. This subject addresses the above need by providing an overview of the restaurant industry and an introduction to various aspects of restaurant service, starting from basic technical skill as well as interpersonal skills. An understanding of basic restaurant service is important for the students to coupe with the environment of the restaurant.

o Tourism Planning - This course gives an early exposure on tourism planning basics and concepts. In this course students are required to understand the tourism planning requirements, where part of the course evaluation is on the ability of the students to propose planning concepts and site analysis.

o Front Office Management - This course is designed to train students with the systematic approach to Front Office management and procedures by detailing the flow of work involved, and incorporates the application and the usage of computer in the department's daily routines.

o Hospitality Marketing - This course introduces student to the principle of marketing and sales procedure of hospitality and tourism product. It encompasses the relationship between pricing and marketing, the distribution system and how marketing principle can be best applied to a variety of services product.

Entrance Requirement:

The minimum entry requirements for this programme are:

(a) SPM/SPVM with credit in three subjects/Certificate programme from Polytechnic, IPTA or accredited IPTS programme or equivalent.

Expected Salary

Public Sector: Basic starting monthly salary is around RM900.00; plus allowances (such as housing and entertainment) the total can amount to around RM1,300..00

Private Sector: The amount of basic starting monthly salary can vary from the above amount. However, the total amount of monthly salary earned (inclusive of allowances) is subject to negotiation and which can be higher than that earned in the public sector.
