Diploma in Leisure and Outdoor Management

Introduction:

Leisure and Outdoor Management is a profession which is concerned with the leisure and outdoor industries that are an important part of cultural and business activity in Malaysia and overseas. They include private, public and voluntary organizations. This course meets the increasing demand for graduates with vocational skills in planning and organising leisure and outdoor events. It prepares for a career in leisure and recreation and specialises in leisure and recreation events and the management of recreational facilities.

The DLM is conducted over the period of two and a half years on a semester basis (four long and three short semesters), where students will major in event and management areas. Given such academic exposure, graduates of the BLM, therefore, would be in an advantage position to find career opportunities not only in the government sector, but more importantly, in the private and corporate sector. As for the latter career opportunities, graduates are most encouraged to further their study to degree and masters level.

Core Subject Description:

Introduction to Outdoor and Leisure Recreation - This course is designed to train students with the systematic approach to leisure environment by identifying the various combinations of leisure and recreation relationships.

First Aid - This course provides a basic understanding of First Aid and to expose student with the knowledge of administering First Aid. Thus will enable student to become volunteers in any emergency situation.

Recreation Resources Management - Recreation Resource Management is the subjects discussing on the preservation and sustainability operations at the various country's greatest recreation sites, campgrounds and other recreational facilities. 

Swimming - This course is designed to develop students with the skill of swimming and also expose student with the knowledge of water safety procedure.

Life Saving - This course is designed to express the student in life saving and to teach the necessary skills.

Adventure Tourism - This course is designed to train students with the systematic approach to adventure tourism management by identifying the various combinations of elements under leisure and outdoor activities.

Event Practice in Leisure - This course introduces students to event planning processes and technique suitable to the leisure industry. Emphasis is on creating, organizing, identifying sponsors, marketing and implementing real life event. For evaluation and effectiveness of teaching and learning process student will have to plan and organize real life event.

Outdoor Adventure Safety - Students will be exposed to the professional outdoor safety that concerns with potential safety risks and generally adhere to standard professional outdoor and adventure operating procedures

Rescue Operation - This course is designed to train students the various aspects of land-based and aquatic-based rescue operations. Emphasis is given to both the management and operational aspects of a rescue operation. The course emphasizes on leadership and decision making skills in mounting a rescue operation with the context of outdoor and adventure activities.

Leisure Outdoor Marketing - This course is designed to train students with the systematic approach to marketing philosophies and skills management by identifying the various combinations of elements and techniques under leisure and outdoor activities.

Leisure Facility & Design Management - This course is designed to train students with the systematic approach to leisure facilities design by identifying the various combinations of elements and techniques under leisure and outdoor activities.

Outdoor Instructions Techniques - Students will be trained to a systematic approach to tourism technique and skills management by identifying the various combinations of elements and techniques under leisure and outdoor activities.

Recreation and Disability - This course is designed to provide a window onto a wide landscape of ability and what is possible recreation for the disabled. Student can learn the potential of disable people have created new lifestyle opportunities for themselves following a disabling injury or illness. They also will be exposed about the many products, services and organizations available.

Wilderness Survival Management - Study how to survive in almost any outdoor environment with emphasis on management, clinical and safety.

Entrance Requirement:

The minimum entry requirements for this programme are:

SPM / SPVM with credit in three subjects / Certificate programme from Polytechnic, IPTA or accredited IPTS programme or equivalent.
