Diploma in Education (TESL)
Introduction:
At the end of doing their Diploma in Education (DTESL), graduates will become teachers of English in primary schools. Many people assume that teaching English must be "easy" but in reality, to be good, one must understand the pedagogical and psychological theories related to the development of children. This course offers students an in depth understanding of the teaching of the English language. At the end of the course, students need to complete a 14 week practicum in a primary school.
The MSU-BTESL programme differs from other programme in the country because we emphasize the acquisition of soft skills such as using ICT, communication skills, public speaking, developing leadership skills, developing critical thinking and problem solving. It is these soft-skills that allow 95% of MSU graduates, on average, to find a job six months after they finish our programme.
After completing their DTESL programme, students can either start working or join the BTESL and get exemptions for 10 subjects.

FAQs:
"Why do a Diploma when I can do a Degree?"
The debate between Diploma and Degree is an old one in Malaysia. The bottom line is that some students have constraints - generally linked to low levels of income - which means that they need to work as soon as possible. In that case, doing a diploma is a good alternative. In any case, if they complete the diploma, students still can progress to bachelor without any problem.
"Does DTESL allow graduates to develop their fluency in the English language?"
No - Students who join DTESL are supposed to be already fluent. Most of the course focuses on how to teach English.
"How theoretical / practical is the course?"
The beginning of the course is quite theoretical. In the last semester though, students have to complete a 14 weeks practicum in a primary school.
"Is being an English teacher a good career?"
The reality is that good English teachers are rare. First, you need to love children. Second, you need to love to teach and, third, you need to love the English language. However, if you have all these qualities, you will find that you will be appreciated wherever you are.
"What does it take to succeed in doing the DTESL?"
At MSU, we want to build a generation of graduates that are professional, ethical and independent. We always advise our students to set clear goals for themselves and manage their time effectively. With those two characteristics, being successful in doing the DTESL is straightforward.
