Bachelor in Food Service Technology (Hons)

Introduction:

The Bachelor in Food Service Technology (Hons) not only emphasizes on academic theories but also on real-life activities. This programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding on the theoretical and applied aspects of food service technology. This course exposes the students to the monitoring techniques and positive approaches towards successful business operations in relation to food services.

Objective:

The main objective for the Bachelor in Food Service Technology (Hons) programme is to prepare students in term of knowledge and skill in this field and produce manpower with innovative and confidence attitude.

Career Prospect:

Graduates of Bachelor in Food Service Technology (Hons) may hold positions as Food Manufacturing officers, Kitchen Planners/Menu Planners, Operations Executives, Quality Control Officer, Food Technologist, Quality Assurance Officers and Fast Food Restaurant Managers. In addition, the graduates can also apply for jobs in hotel, airlines or tourism industry.

Entry Requirements:

  1. Minimum requirement (STPM candidates):

    1. Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)
      Candidates will have to pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination or equivalent with credits in Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Melayu (Syllabus X) / Bahasa Malaysia II and Pass in general Science or Additional Science or Biology / Chemistry / Physics;

      AND

    2. Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or equivalent
      Candidates will have to pass Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) examination with at least:

      1. Pass with C grade in 3 subjects including General Studies paper OR

      2. Pass with C grade in 2 subjects including General Studies, and another 2 subjects with D grade OR

  2. Malaysian Ministry of Education's Matriculation Certificate or MSU foundation or equivalent qualification from other institutions approved by Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education and accredited by Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA);

    OR

  3. Minimum passes 3 subjects of A 'Level' (GCE)

    OR

  4. Minimum 65-70% score for The South Australian Matriculation (SAM)

    OR

  5. Minimum 80% score for Canadian Pre-University Program (CPU)

    OR

  6. Diploma in related fields from PTPL/ MSU or Diploma/Certificate in related fields from Polytechnics, IPTA or accredited IPTS or other institutions recognized by Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.

Course Content:

The course is divided into core (school), core (programme) & compulsory (university) courses. The credits for compulsory subjects are 24 units, core (school) subject are 15 units & core (programme) subject are 81 units. These accumulate to an overall total of 120 units in order for the student to graduate.

In the first year, students will be taught the basics of Applied Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Food Science and Nutrition, Health Nutrition and Food Service.

In the second year, students will be taught subjects like Health Nutritional, Food Microbiology & Sanitation, Food Service Strategic Management, Food Processing and Preservation, Restaurant Management and Food Quality Control and Assurance.
