Introduction:

This specialist course has been designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to enter the newly emerging and exciting area of mobile and wireless technology. The advent of mobile phone technologies (such as 3G), mobile games, the proliferation of wireless networking (W-LANs), the use of Bluetooth personal devices, and the widespread use of Internet technologies. Mobile devices that contain sophisticated operating systems are becoming one of the most pervasive technological products that are finding large-scale penetration in both business and consumer markets.

This course is able to develop new and exciting applications for these exciting and emerging mobile and wireless devices. The job market for mobile application developers has rapidly increased over the last few years and a diverse number of roles are available for software engineers within the mobile and wireless industry.

With the rapidly increasing availability of affordable and sophisticated mobile and wireless devices comes the need for specialists in the development of mobile applications and services.

Bachelor in Mobile and Wireless Technology (Hons) will put students firmly in the driving seat of an exciting future in the field of mobile and wireless technology.

Core Subject Description:

Object Oriented Analysis and Design
This course will cover approach towards the data processing and information system (purpose, system and subsystem, information flow, feedback concept, monitoring for control and stability), life cycle, changing process and the stage involved, the need for changes, problem definition, investigation and analysis, design, specification, programming, operation, monitoring and modification.

Internet Programming
Students will be given the skills to write Internet based computer programs to support the presentation of online material on the WWW. Students will also gain knowledge on the existing WWW based technology and they will be given opportunity to design and implement Internet site.

Java Programming
This course introduces Java programming language for the development of applications and applets. The course starts with the basic syntax of Java language, and the concepts of object-oriented programming. This course also covers classes, objects, packages and applet in Java to write programs. In addition to that, the use of multimedia elements in Java applications will be demonstrated. Lab exercises will be given throughout the lab sessions to strengthen the students’ programming skill in Java.

Network and Data Security
This course will provide a practical survey of both the principles and practice of cryptography and network security. It will give an introduction to the mathematical principles of data security and how the principles are applied in the operation system, database system and computer network. Theoretical information, theoretical number, complexity theory and as well as basic algorithms for data security assurance such as encryption and cryptography are also being discussed.

Wireless Technologies and Sservices
This course will explain of how wireless technology and services works, why its impact on the networking industry is so significant, how technology relates to others such as WiMAX and cellular, and the role of the technology will play in the future. This subject focuses the capabilities and mechanism of the evolving IEEE standards.

Mobile Operating System
This course helps the students to comprehend on mobile architecture. Students will be exposed to covering mobile operating system issues and discuss operating system concepts as they are applied to mobile operating systems.

Mobile and wireless Network
This course addresses the fundamentals of wireless and mobile network, including architectures, protocols, and standards. It describes concepts, technology and applications of wireless networking as used in current and next-generation wireless networks. It explains the engineering aspects of network functions and designs. Issues such as mobility management, wireless enterprise networks, GSM, network signaling, WAP, mobile IP, and 3G systems are covered.

Mobile Communication Architecture
This course provides systematic introduction about fundamental mobile communication systems/networks/architecture. Focusing technologies in current year will be digital cellular and sensor wireless broadband communications (Wireless Local area Network, Wireless Personal Area Network, and Fixed/Mobile Broadband Wireless Communication).

Mobile Interactive Design
This course helps the students to comprehend on mobile application and be able to design an interactive mobile application. Students will be exposed to covering mobile interactive application issues from a user need perspective in order to provide services in the current technological era.

Wireless Network and Mobile System Architecture
The course introduces a comprehensive guide to building wireless and mobile networks and services. Based on advanced wireless and mobile network architectures, Personal Communication Services (PCS) offers the enterprise freedom of communication through mobility. This course gives exposes to students on the world of wireless and mobile networks, from the enabling technologies and protocols to creating and managing mobile services.

Client Server Computing
This course discuss the concept of client server development. Specific issues such as business requirement, addressing and security are also discussed. Technical aspect and management on client and server are also covered.

Developing Mobile Application
This course introduces the students to build high-value mobile applications that take advantage of IT infrastructures. It also exposes the students to add mobility features to existing mobile solutions. After a comprehensive analysis of the landscape and trends of the J2ME platform, student can uses the source code of several real-world applications to illustrate the design, architecture and best practices of end-to-end smart mobile solutions.

Network Operating System
This course will cover the operating system for series of machine, concept and operating system structure for hardware component system. This includes operating system classification for LAN, WAN and distributed process.

Distributed System
This course helps the students to comprehend on distributed system design and basic concepts. Students will be exposed to distribute system operation. Topics covered in this course are basic concepts on distributed systems, system model, overview of network, inter process communication, distributed objects and remote invocation, operating system support and distributed file system.

Mobile IP Architecture
This course helps the students to comprehend on mobile IP architecture and basic concepts. Students will be exposed to covering mobile communication issues from an IP perspective and IP issues from a mobile communications perspective in order to better clarify details of IP and third-generation (3G) convergence.

Java Web Services
This course introduce integrate mobile clients into the Web services infrastructure. It discusses existing and emerging J2ME XML and SOAP and specifications. This course also helps the students to add mobility features to existing web services solutions. This course will provide practices of end-to-end smart mobile solutions.

Project
This course covers training to students in the overall area that has been learned. At the end of the training, student are required to prepare reports on their activities, knowledge acquired and experiences during the training.

 

Entrance Requirement:

  1. Minimum requirement (STPM candidates)

    1. Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Candidates will have to pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination or equivalent with with credits in Bahasa Malaysia or Bahasa Melayu (Syllabus X) / Bahasa Malaysia II

      AND

    2. Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or equivalent Candidates will have to pass Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) examination with at least:

      1. Pass with C grade in 3 subjects including General Studies paper

        OR

      2. Pass with C grade in 2 subjects including General Studies, and another 2 subjects with D grade

        OR

  2. Malaysian Ministry of Education’s Matriculation Certificate or KUTPM foundation.

    OR

  3. A ‘Level’ (GCE) 6r equivalent certificate.

  4. Diploma in related fields from PTPL/ KUTPM or Diploma/Certificate in related fields from Polytechnics, IPTA or accredited IPTS or other institutions recognized by the Senate of Management and Science University (MSU).
