MSU Graduate School offers a research programmes leading to PhD and Master of Science. These programmes are assessed entirely on the basis of research presented in a thesis or dissertation.

As a research student, you will be allocated a supervisory team to guide you through your research project. Generally, all research students are required to register two modules, i.e. Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis. However, students are also required to take other modules as and when instructed by their respective school.
Entrance Qualifications
- A candidate admitted into a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) shall possess any of the following qualifications and must demonstrate an ability to carry out independent research:
- A Master's degree from any universities or an equivalent qualification of an institution as approved by the Senate;
- However, application from candidates who has a Bachelor's degree with First Class Honors may also be considered. In this case, the candidates will register initially at Master level, and based on their performance they may be promoted into the Ph.D. program.
- A candidate admitted into a Master's Program shall possess any of the following qualifications and must demonstrate an ability to carry out independent research:
- A Bachelor's degree with 2nd Class Honors from MSU; or
- A Bachelor's degree with 2nd Class Honors from another universities or an equivalent qualification of an institution as approved by the Senate.
- The Graduate School Board may require a candidate to follow any subjects taught at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, if the Graduate School Board is of the opinion that the subject is required for the candidate to complete his/her study successfully.
- In special cases, the Senate may, on the recommendation of the Graduate School Board, permit a candidate of Doctor of Philosophy from another universities or institutions to be admitted as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
- In the case of a candidate admitted under the provisions of section D above, the Senate may, on the recommendation of the Graduate School Board, count in part or in full, the number of months the candidate has registered towards the minimum period of candidature of Doctor of Philosophy.
Duration of Candidature
- The following duration of candidature shall be applied to Master and Ph.D. programs;

- On certain cases, upon the recommendation of the supervisor, through the Postgraduate Board, the Senate may allow a candidate to submit his/her dissertation for examination earlier than the minimum period as specified in table above.
- Except with the permission of the Senate, a candidate shall complete the degree within a time specified in the above table from the date of registration.
- A candidate may be allowed leave of absence from his/her candidature for the following reasons:
- On medical grounds; or
- In special circumstances, provided that the candidate has completed at least one year of his/her candidature
Leave of absence granted for the reasons stated above must not be more than one year at any one time and the total duration of leave of absence granted to a candidate must not be more than two years. Such leave of absence shall not be counted towards the period of the candidate's postgraduate candidature. A candidate may also be allowed leave of absence to follow another course in KUTPM or in another institution of higher learning, subject to the following conditions:
- The course that the candidate will be following is a requirement for the candidate's postgraduate candidature in MSU and is recommended by the Board of the School of the candidate.
- The period of such leave of absence shall be not more than one year.
- The period of leave of absence granted shall not be counted towards the maximum or the minimum period of the candidate's postgraduate candidature.
How to Apply for a Research Degree
Students will need to contact the appropriate Dean to obtain advice regarding their suitability for study by research. Prospective students should seek approval regarding:
- Entrance qualifications
- Research interest (short proposal to be forwarded) - whether the school can supervise the student.
