For a week in November, Management and Science University (MSU) was a hub bustling with creativity, radiant colours, and distinct fashion segments brimming with brilliance and innovation infused with sustainability.
As one of the eminent flagship events of the University, the seventh edition of MSU Fashion Week 2024 by the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA) was a productive accomplishment.
The MSU Fashion Week 2024 spanned four days from November 18 to 21, spearheaded by the students undertaking the Fashion Show Management subject in the Bachelor in Fashion Design with Marketing (Hons) and Diploma in Fashion Design programmes at SHCA.
Through this event, SHCA solidified global and interfaculty collaborations.
SHCA collaborated with UEDA College of Fashion in Japan for SDG’s Creative Cloth Remaking and A World of Issey Miyake’s 3D Modelling and Designing workshops, as well as the MSU Modest Selangor Runway 2024.
With a shared passion for creative design and a thirst for innovation, 10 students from the Bachelor of Graphic Design (Hons) and Bachelor in Creative Multimedia (Hons) programmes at the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE) joined the 2-day workshop.
The Media Science & Graphic (MSG) Department at FISE also extended their support for MSU Fashion Week 2024. The department organised a Cartooning Demo & workshop with alumni and industry partners, as well as an Interior Design & Pop-Up Art Exhibition.
Various premises at MSU featured a series of interactive programmes in conjunction with Fashion Week. Pop-Up Booth, Fashion Exhibition: Reimagining Nusantara, 30-meter Batik Colouring: Hues of Heritage, and MSU UP: Upcycle Project (designing for circularity) lasted throughout the week, allowing every MSUrian to immerse and engage in the appreciation of arts.
On the first day, the Musician Club at SHCA delivered a soulful performance to the Sounds of Nusantara, while Natrah Khalid, an MSU alumna, led the Modelling Workshop: Walk the Walk.
UEDA College of Fashion hosted A World of Issey Miyake's 3D Modelling and Design on the second day, while Desa Alam Batik showcased Print and Preserve: Cold Wax Batik.
The third day entailed MSG Cartooning Demo & Workshop, Interior Design, and Pop Art Exhibition, while the last day encompassed Eco-Print Workshop by Ghomah Batik and a seminar on brand evolution and reinvention in fashion.
MSU Fashion Week 2024 offered a platform to nurture young talents through a focused competition, Up-Couture. Teams of five students from each institution collaborated to design womenswear using recycled materials. While 70% of the design work was completed at their respective institutions over two weeks, the final 30% was crafted during Fashion Week. The finished garments were then showcased and presented to evaluators.
SMK Bagan Terap, Kolej Vokasional Sultan Abdul Samad Banting, Kolej Vokasional Sepang, Kolej Komuniti Bukit Mertajam, and Kolej Vokasional ERT Sepang took part in the Up-Couture competition, with the latter bagging the Gold Award for their innovative and sustainable designs.
The Chancellor Hall at the MSU main campus in Shah Alam hosted the highlight of MSU Fashion Week, the MSU Modest Selangor Runway 2024. The runway featured a distinctive showcase of 49 garments, 29 of which were inspired by the rich heritage of Malaysia’s 14 states.
The Modest Selangor Runway 2024 was graced by distinguished attendees, including Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, President and Founder of MSU; Professor Puan Sri Dato’ Dr. Junainah Abd Hamid, Vice Chancellor of MSU; Dr. Hitoshi Tajima, President of UEDA College of Fashion, Japan; Makoto Morishita, MSU Board of Governors; Professor Dr. Abdul Jalil Ghazali, Senior Vice President for Industry Linkage & Entrepreneurship; and Azizul Jamaludin, Dean of SHCA, along with the senior management team of MSU.
