Management and Science University (MSU) students are known for being well-rounded and employers’ top choice; out of every hundred MSU graduates, ninety-eight are employed within six months of convocation. Our Bachelor of Fashion Design with Marketing student Siti Nadhilah is no exception. Currently in her second semester on the programme, she recently won the Best Sketch prize at a local Gelato Raya 2018 competition. Let’s get to know the Diploma in Fashion Design alumna!

Hi, everyone! My name is Siti Nadhilah Mustafa. I'd love to tell you about my learning experiences at MSU, and how I won the Best Sketch category at the GelatoRaya 2018 competition.

How it all started

I have been in love with fashion design since I was just a little girl. There was this fashion design show that I discovered, which gave off sophisticated vibes! It made me want to be part of the art, so I was set on my path to fashion design. I came to MSU and registered for the Diploma in Fashion Design (DFD) programme, which exposed me to all the fundamentals of designing, marketing, AND communication skills – all that added real value to my diploma.

After the Diploma programme, I felt I still had more to discover in fashion design; so I chose to progress to Bachelor of Fashion Design with Marketing (BFD). I stayed on at MSU because with all the facilities at MSU's School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA), I was confident I would have all the help I need to be a successful fashion designer.

And was I right!

My MSU learning experiences

They are never limited to in-class learning. Our lecturers, all with strong backgrounds in the fashion industry, often show us the way out there. And as we are always encouraged to be well-rounded, balanced graduates, I try to balance academic with extra-curricular. I'm an active member of the Performance Arts and Cultural Club (PACC) and the MSU Fashion Club. I also play netball on my house team the Yellow Lion at MSU’s annual Sports United Championship (SUCA).

Other than being co-curricular active, I also joined the Global Mobility Programme (GMP) to Ueda College of Fashion in Japan and learned the Japanese approach to fashion design. I was very intrigued by their super creative and unique anime-influenced fashion. The GMP experience has definitely added on to my fashion perspective.

My first competition

Winning the GelatoRaya 2018 was truly unexpected. I had discovered about the sketching competition from a friend who urged me to join. I figured I could try. I told my mentor about it and she supported me. I am so thankful to her because she helped me a lot with my sketches, and they won the judges’ heart. It took me two whole weeks working on the sketches - help from mentor and friends included - for which I thank them all. Never could have done it if it weren’t for their help!

It was my first time ever, joining a design competition, to see what I'm capable of. Can't help to be proud of myself!

My hopes and dreams

For the remaining years of my study time here, I hope to join more and more competitions. They are a great way to introduce myself to the fashion industry and get to know more people as well as to gain experience. I plan to have my own brand in the future and be an entrepreneur, a job creator.

To all out there planning on joining the Fashion Design programmes at MSU, believe me that you are making the right choice. It would be a great first step for you. Take it, #go2msu, and join me on an amazing journey!
