Muhammad Nazrul Alif Nazarudin began his academic journey at Management and Science University (MSU), where he pursued a Diploma in Culinary Arts and a Bachelor in Culinary Arts (Honours) from 2016 to 2021. Although his passion for cooking sparked his interest in the culinary world, he soon discovered a greater purpose beyond the kitchen.

“My journey in higher education began with a strong interest in food and cooking,” he shared. “I’ve always loved the idea of bringing joy to people through food, and MSU gave me the opportunity to explore that passion in depth.”

Today, Nazrul is the founder/co-founder and Director of a thriving business called Deli Agro Enterprise, which specialises in cultivating pineapples, pisang tanduk (cow horn banana), and jambu lohan (Lohan guava). Though it may seem like a shift from culinary arts, he sees agriculture as a natural extension of his love for food. For him, this enables him to contribute to the supply chain in a meaningful way.

“Pineapples take about 12 to 13 months to grow from planting to maturity,” he explained. “It may seem like a long time, but with a proper routine, it becomes a manageable and profitable business.”

At full capacity, his farm produces between 2 to 2.5 tonnes of pineapples each week, supplying vendors, restaurants, and consumers across the Melaka area. As a producer, grower, and supplier, Nazrul plays a vital role in ensuring that fresh, high-quality fruit reaches the market.

“I conduct monthly checks on fertiliser application, soil health, pest control, and growth hormone use. I also manage the grass around the farm to maintain a clean and healthy environment.”

While cooking remains his first love, agriculture opened doors to broader opportunities. The demand for local produce continues to grow, and Nazrul appreciates the strong support network from government initiatives and farming communities.

“Being hands-on in the food supply chain gives me a unique sense of satisfaction and purpose,” he said.

Reflecting on his choice of university, Nazrul recalled how MSU’s rapid growth and emerging reputation initially caught his attention. “I hadn’t even heard of MSU until I came across some brochures and vouchers promoting its achievements and international recognitions,” he said. “That moment changed everything. I knew it was a place where I could grow.”

His experience at MSU was filled with personal development, lifelong friendships, and valuable lessons. He credits the university for shaping his work ethic and mindset.

“I was involved in organising events, which taught me about teamwork, time management, and conflict resolution. The lecturers were supportive, kind, and always approachable. MSU didn’t just teach me to work hard, it has taught me to work smart and stay disciplined.”

Looking ahead, Nazrul has plans beyond agriculture. He hopes to open his first barbershop, followed by a restaurant in Melaka, where he aims to offer unique culinary experiences rooted in local flavour.

“My dream is to merge my background in cooking with my entrepreneurial spirit.”

Nazrul’s work through Deli Agro goes beyond business, it reflects a commitment to community and sustainability. His efforts align closely with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 1 (ending poverty), Goal 2 (achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture), and Goal 8 (fostering inclusive economic growth and decent work for all). By growing local produce, creating job opportunities, and strengthening the food supply chain, he contributes to both national progress and global development.

To those following in his footsteps, Nazrul shares simple but powerful advice:

“Stay diligent, work hard, be disciplined, and never give up. Always look for the silver lining and surround yourself with positive people. Success starts with mindset.”
