Inscribed in 2021’s UNESCO representative list of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage is songket, Malaysia’s traditional fabric created by women of the Malay Peninsula and Sarawak. Songket’s delicate craftsmanship is owed to its artisanal handloom weaving technique passed on from generations dating back to the sixteenth century. Safeguarding its heritage value is Management and Science University (MSU), with the 3rd MSU International Songket Run. 

 

Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) 3 for Good Health and Well-Being, 11 for Sustainable Cities and Communities, and 17 for Partnerships for the Goals, MSU International Songket Run of 2023 is the first since the pandemic; with editions 1.0 and 2.0 respectively organized in 2018 and 2019 by the Student and Career Development (SCD) Department of Management and Science University (MSU).

 

MSU International Songket Run 2018 even made the Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) with ‘The Largest Number of People (4,878) Wearing or Having Songket Elements as Part of Their Dressing’, and MSU International Songket Run of 2019 with ‘The Largest Participation (4,868) in a Songket Running Event’.

 

The 5km run (10km online) around Shah Alam Section 13 where the MSU Main Campus is had five thousand participants in various songket attires and songket-themed motifs this year. Among them is Azhan Dziaruddin of Kuala Lumpur with his cat Jibek, whose tagging along on its owner’s back was dubbed the SongCat Run.

 

 

Fifteen families with a wheel-chaired contestant each from the Bikeisable Group participated in the MSU International Songket Run 3.0; led by its president Wira Sudepja Rabu with his daughter Nur Wadihan Wira Sudepja who has cerebral palsy.

 

 

Also participating were members of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) and players from the Selangor MAC Futsal Team.

 

Finishing first at the MSU International Songket Run 3.0 is Yayasan MSU Scholar and MSU Sports Ambassador Mohd Syahidan Alias a.k.a. Edan Syah, who clocked 18 minutes 30 seconds in his traditional Malay suit and songket samping. In second and third places of the Men’s Category respectively are Gan Kai En of Kuala Selangor and Diploma in Computer Forensic student at the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE) Arun Nadarajah. 

 

 

Winners in the Women’s Category comprise Lim Teng Doll and Pang Chiew Ping of SACRun, respectively in first and third place, and Iris Alanna Jansen Muhammad Kelvin Jansen in second place. Each winner in the two categories received a pair of Ortus Eight shoes as well as cash prizes of RM500, RM300, and RM200.

 

Competition winners include Umar Abdul Aziz Muhammad Amirul Mukminin as The Youngest Participant, Ros Intan as The Most Senior Participant, the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) as The Largest Participating MSU Group, DCH Contract Manufacturing as The Largest Participating Public Group, and Azren Muharram as well as Hasliza Abdul Hamid for The Most Creative Family Group

 

Two iPads, a mountain bicycle, an exercise bike, a camping tent, and a hamper went out to Grand Lucky Draw winners Nur Hidayah Md Rasid, Muhammad Makinudin Mohd Tajudin, Nor Amalina Khair Anuar, Siti Nahdatul Syima Rumlan, and Ahmed Zama Mohammed.

 

Prizes at the MSU International Songket Run 3.0 were sponsored by MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC), radio station Rakita 107.9, National Heritage Department, Football Association of Selangor, Yustie Dienna Touch of Songket, Affin Islamic Bank, Alfana Studio, Nestle Malaysia, Nivea, FZ Gift Merchandise, Sannis 365, EF Digital Media, and Smart Athletics Coaching (SAC).

 

 

The MSU International Songket Run 3.0 was flagged off at the MSU U-Square by the Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Norashikin, who was received on campus by MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid and MSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Puan Sri Datuk Dr Junainah Abd Hamid. 

 

 

MSU’s Performing Arts and Culture Club (PACC) provided the Saturday morning’s main entertainment.
