Among the various spectrums of literary arts, poetry has sustained its eminence across millennia and continents. The splendour of poetry springs from the distinct flavours life has to offer from every nook and cranny of the world, which have eventually become an integral realm of heritage for all cultures.
On August 16, Malam Apresiasi Puisi Nusantara, the first joint engagement between Management and Science University's (MSU's) Student and Career Development (SCD) and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), took place in the Performing Arts Theatre.
The event focused on recognising and acknowledging the richness of Malaysian and Nusantara poetry's cultural heritage while serving as a platform for cross-cultural learning and facilitating meaningful interaction and exchange of ideas, as well as promoting cultural understanding and harmony among MSU students, drawing attention to Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The event, marking the beginning of the independence month’s celebration, carried the theme “MSU Jiwa Merdeka.”
Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, President of MSU; Professor Puan Sri Datuk Dr. Junainah Abd Hamid, Vice-Chancellor of MSU; Dr. Hazami Jahari, Director-General of DBP; Dato’ Rahman Shaari; and Roslan Madun graced the evening.
The poems were eloquently delivered by several local students, including Khair Uzari Kamarul Zaman from the Diploma in Culinary Arts, Izra Imran Razali pursuing a Bachelor in Law and Commerce (Hons), Muhammad Hakeem Abd Rahim from the Bachelor of Counselling and Guidance (Hons), Imran Hakim Hanafi from the Bachelor in Psychology (Hons), Mohd Nur Izzad Hizam also from the Bachelor in Law and Commerce (Hons), Muhammad Alif Affendy from the Diploma in Games Design and Animation, and Harivayshanavi Sri Pathma Rajah from the Foundation in Science Biology/Health Science.
Additionally, international students who participated were Aliyah Nurfathiah Abdullah Hasazaman from Brunei, enrolled in the Diploma in Logistics Management; Gusti Anggun Jati from Indonesia, pursuing a Master in Management; Sarari Ahmed M. Zafer from Saudi Arabia, studying for a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons); Raghad Awad Hassan Haroun from Sudan, majoring in Bachelor in International Business (Hons); Murjana Zahirah Abdul Raseed Ibrahim from India, studying Bachelor in Computer Engineering (Hons); and Ghida Bassem Selaiman from Lebanon, who is pursuing a Bachelor in Event Management (Hons).
Khairul Anuar Rezo and Dato’ Rosli Yusof, both staff members of MSU, also captivated the audiences with their recitations of poetry.
Known for his distinctive voice and heartfelt lyrics, often focussing on themes of love, nostalgia, and Malaysian culture in the genre of pop and folk music, Roslan Madun dedicated a poem and rendered his renowned ‘Lemak Manis’, leaving the audiences mesmerised by the retrospective ambience of this lyrical masterpiece.
Dato’ Rahman Shaari, the highly regarded Malaysian poet, writer, and academic who was honoured with the title ‘Sasterawan Negara” (National Laureate) in recognition of his significant contributions to Malaysian literature, was also featured to deliver his piece.
In his officiating speech and poetry recital, "Jiwa Merdeka MSU," the MSU President expressed his trust that this collaboration will not only strengthen but also sustain MSU as an aspiring higher learning institution to move forward.
“Through arts and culture, we can enhance the advancement of our University. We are committed to empowering the national language, fostering the growth of the literary arts, and establishing these as fundamental pillars to shape a vibrant society for the future. We hope to nurture arts and culture in harmony with other key frameworks,” he reiterated.
