Studies on obesity, the importance of eating right, and sustainable agricultural waste management were among the winning contributions at the recent 35th Annual Scientific Conference of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia (NSM). Three from the Management and Science University (MSU) Department of Healthcare Professional took home the virtual conference’s PhD Thesis prize and two consolation prizes.
Lecturer at MSU's Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) Dr Sharifah Intan Zainun Sharif Ishak received a prize for her thesis titled ‘Effectiveness of “Eat Right, Be Positive About Your Body and Live Actively” Programme in Preventing Overweight and Disordered Eating Among Malaysian Adolescents’.
Two students of MSU’s Bachelor in Nutrition (Hons) programme were shortlisted out of sixty undergraduate entries from various universities. Receiving the consolation prizes were FHLS students Sasveni Subramaniam and Rennusha Murugan.
Sasveni, who presented the ‘Association of Physical Activity and Stress Level with Weight Status of Secondary School Teachers in Shah Alam’ is supervised by Sarina Sariman and Associate Professor Dr Sairah Abdul Karim.
Finding fruit by-products’ potential as an alternative source for supplements and nutraceuticals while reducing agricultural-waste’s environmental pollution is Rennusha, with her ‘Evaluation of Antioxidant Activities and Phytoconstituents in Crude Oils of Pulasan and Salak By-Products’. She is supervised by Dr Tan Seok Tyug.
