Antibodies take five to ten days to develop in the human body. Two members of the Management and Science University (MSU) alumni provide a tool for their measurement.

ELISA or Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay identifies antigens, peptides, proteins, and hormones alike. Sharing the same technology as EIA or Enzyme Immunoassay, ELISA is less time-consuming and easier to perform than real-time PCR or Polymerase Chain Reaction.

Says alumnus Muhammad Ezham Dahlan of MSU Diploma in Management ’07, “It’s popular among medical and biomedical researchers because it’s easy and ready to use; a one-package that aids at so many levels. If you buy all the parts separately, it can cost you quite a bit.”

Chief Operating Officer (COO) Ezham is one part of two that make up Mutiara Bioscientex (M) Sdn Bhd, the company selling the ELISA kit under the brand name Mutiara Saintifik. The other half is his better half; former classmate turned wife, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hafizah Husin.

“We met at MSU, fell in love, married, and had two kids. We created the business from home, counting ten years now and ten members from the original three when we had just started. Being the consultant that connects clients with distributors, we help bring the best medical and clinical products at the best prices. We also provide budget and strategic management for our clients,” says Hafizah.

Quality is never accidental but the result of intelligent effort, says the company; who goes all out to ensure it. Mutiara Saintifik takes on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) seriously by guiding clients on the proper disposal of hazardous materials.

“We mentor them on eco-friendly ways and use of the autoclave, collaborate with agencies such as FRIM to understand procedures better and learn more ourselves, and connect such agencies with universities to facilitate knowledge transfer on goods disposal SOP. We also provide training on how to use some of the more sophisticated equipment we bring in,” continues Ezham.

That he is doing so well in something he once thought to be temporary is in fact a turnaround victory.

“I failed all the subjects in my bachelor studies after the Diploma in Management. I came to biotechnology when a friend of my dad, who had been in the industry a very long time, hired me to do administrative work. Besides the accounting, marketing, and all the front desk jobs I did, I started to learn the industry’s ins and outs. That was when I realized my calling,” recalls the COO.

The perseverance in turning things around is owed to inspiration from his alma mater.

“MSU inspires me by its explosive growth from when the University started out as PTPL College. And its president is a father figure to us; compassionate, thoughtful, and encouraging. He cares about us, calling for meet-ups and hi-tea. We are all really lucky to have him as our role model,” says Ezham.

The two are not only grateful but also giving back, in true 2G culture of their cultivation at Management and Science University (MSU).

“We want to help students who are struggling academically to still achieve in their future careers. We are planning on training and comprehensive guidance on business, especially concerning the biotechnology industry. We will also do a lot more collaborations; with hospitals and universities, researchers as well as institutions. Having graduated from Malaysia's Most Entrepreneurial Private University, it is only fitting that we would want to raise more entrepreneurs ourselves as we expand our team,” they remark.

Inside learning, industry input

And concluding with encouragement from the one that had been there, “Don’t ever give up or shy away from opportunities. Just keep going!”
