Entrepreneurship is an endeavour regularly spurred on by a spirit of ‘How about’ and ‘Why not?’ Mama Meals’ Erniezaam Abdullah attests to it.

“I had asked a friend whether I should start selling packed meals cooked by my mother,” recalls the Student Representatives Council (SRC) Sports and Recreation Exco 2018/2019, “and said friend’s reply was an enthusiastic Let’s try it!”

Thus was the beginning of Mama Meals, which debuted as Zaamran Meals in a nod to the two in the conversation that started it. Erniezaam, from the Honours programme Bachelor in Outdoor, Leisure and Adventure Management (now Bachelor in Outdoor Recreation Management) at MSU’s School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA), and his friend, Ahmad Imran Mustapha Kamil from the Bachelor in Psychology (Hons) programme at the School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS), soon began receiving regular orders on repeat. By June 2020, Zaam was able to register the company; whose logo was designed by yet another friend – fellow MSUrian Nurul Amal Haziqah Hj Masir from the Bachelor in Early Childhood Education (Hons) programme at SESS.

After Malaysia’s Restricted Movement Order (RMO) was lifted, Erniezaam rebranded his product into Mama Meals; in part to signify a new beginning, in another, a tribute to the cook.

“My mother had operated a canteen before, a small one at a construction site. I know she enjoyed the cooking, but the construction wrapped up and the canteen had to close. It led me to thinking about channeling her passion into those packed lunches that make up Zaamran Meals.”

A common startup challenge among many aspiring entrepreneurs is in securing a proper place to do business. Zaam is grateful for the Jump$hop opportunity from MSU’s Business Enterprise Development (BED) unit. Mama Meals now sells in MSU’s own U-Shop on Level 2 at U-Plaza; alongside another product by the company – cheesecuit – on campus at Management and Science University (MSU) in Shah Alam Section 13.

“I am especially proud of my mom’s cheesecuit,” says Zaam, “and would like for it to get into more stores including the Petronas Mesra, MyNews, or even FamilyMart. I would also love for Mama Meals to grow into a full-fledged café or restaurant in future. COVID-19 may be here today, but just like the story with my mother and the canteen, the silver lining will be there.”
