Every disability presents the world with the potential for transformation or innovation. Look around you and notice how often a ramp is absent or how narrow a sidewalk can be. Add a tree root to the sidewalk and the problem exacerbates for the person in a wheelchair. Siti Nur Syahfikah Mohamad Syahrin suggests how we can all effect change: The next time you meet a differently abled person, discover what he or she knows that you don’t and use it to make the all-important difference.

Inspired by a particular course she enjoyed learning on the Diploma in Human Capital Management programme at the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) of Management and Science University (MSU), Syahfikah who graduated with the Class of 2021 at MSU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony is all for sharing her newfound knowledge on Safety and Health.

“The course helped me to be better prepared for the working world, and being able to contribute my perspective as the person in the wheelchair in an able-ist world puts me in a happy place.”

Once dreaming of a career in Human Resource but is now continuing into Bachelor in International Business (Hons) at MSU's FBMP while managing a skincare business, Syahfikah had chosen the University for its wheelchair-friendly facilities as well as its varied and compelling learning experiences. She who lives in the nearby royal town of Klang commutes to campus with her parents' help and gets off their daily ride at the Academic Block.

“Wide aisles and spacious areas such as in the Library and Resource Centre make it easy for wheelchairs to move around, and there are ramps everywhere on campus – at The Hub, for example, which remains my favourite place for lepak and chicken rice. I consider myself an adventurous person, so I joined MSU’s Kelab Kembara. And while I count being able to participate in site visits that were important towards completing my final-year project as enjoyable – among those were orphanages and the museums of Melaka – my most memorable one has to be the experience of selling on campus. It taught me not only how important it is to have and to build an entrepreneurial mindset but also to be brave!”
