She knows the type of house they live in; and how they struggle hand to mouth, day to day. Then Sasaliza Mohd Sirin came to study at Management and Science University (MSU) and found a role model for social entrepreneurship in Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

Inspired by the MSU President’s encouragement of community engagement, the alumna from MSU’s Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP) has turned many a life since. For the past two years, a kiosk she had set up at the Shah Alam Hospital has been providing steady income to her neighbours in Padang Jawa.

“Having emerged from the same socio-economic group, I couldn’t not do anything to help the people I consider my own, what more with the education that I’ve been fortunate to receive from MSU,” says the KSL Resources founder.

The traditional Malay savouries that she helps sell at her Raga Kitchen hospital kiosk are supplied by B40 vendors from her Padang Jawa neighbourhood. The various kuih and rice sets such as Malaysian favourites Nasi Lemak, Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kerabu, and Nasi Tomato to name a few are home-prepared and pre-packed by the suppliers at their own place and delivered to Liza at her home in the wee hours of the morning. At 6.30am, a runner sends the food items on their onward journey to the kiosk.

“I feel joy in making a difference to these people’s lives. I was there once, so it's an honour for me to be able to help now. The euphoria pushes me to keep going and do more. It gives me soul satisfaction.”

Eight partner suppliers are currently on the company payroll and Liza has plans to take the business from small kiosk to full-fledged restaurant run by B40 staffers.

“I need more funds and external support to continue doing this. MSU has the Jump$tart programme in its entrepreneurship ecosystem, and I’m thinking of applying. Meanwhile, I can’t wait for the aunties who are partnering with me to come work at my restaurant as my cooks,” she smiles.

Happy to have studied at MSU and honoured for the opportunity, the Bachelor in Accountancy (Hons) majoring in Finance from MSU’s Class of 2010 recommends the University highly.

“My success is owed to Tan Sri President, himself a successful entrepreneur. I’m overawed by his selfless service to community and the extensive charity work of MSU Foundation. Social entrepreneurship comes with a great responsibility. One day, I’d like to be as successful as he is, not for personal gains but to be in a better position to help others. Business is not merely about making money. It’s enriching when you’re able to transform lives.”
