Singular focus is an element staple to judo, whose training led Siti Hazira Haridan to twice clinching second-runner-up in competitions. Then the navy came to MSU, and found herself widening her perspective.

“It was really nice to learn from fellow MSUrians who come from various backgrounds and countries, a great experience all around,” says Siti Hazira.

Having begun her career with an administrative assignment at the Navy's Markas Pemerintahan Pendidikan dan Latihan (MPPL), Siti Hazira had to work her way to the job of her dream. Starting with preparing only brunch, the Diploma in Culinary Arts graduate of Management and Science University (MSU) now does breakfast to supper for 600 pax daily; onboard the Sultan Idris Royal Ship KDSI 1.

“For large events I usually prepare ingredients such as onions and chicken a day earlier. The largest I have cooked for fed 1,500 people in one sitting, and the most memorable was the royal birthday celebration on Hari Keputeraan Sultan Selangor,” explains Hazira.

The navy cook, called bendari, is thankful for the opportunity of earning her diploma through the collaboration between MSU and the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM). Each and every one of us shall receive an education, says TLDM; and quality education should be accessible to all, says MSU. That collaboration has so far produced two hundred and seventeen Diploma in Culinary Arts graduates since the MoA was signed on the 20th of October 2014.

Education for all: Anatomy for the army

Counting eleven years of service in the Navy this year, Siti Hazira recalls being in the pioneer batch receiving the resulting higher education opportunity at MSU. A year after graduating in 2016 with an Academic Award to her name, she was awarded both Best Laskar onboard KDSI 1 and Best Laskar at MPPL and was nominated for Best Laskar in TLDM. Currently training at Malbatt Village Port Dickson for the United Nations interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Siti Hazira Haridan names her parents as the greatest inspiration behind a desire to be the best in everything and credits Management and Science University (MSU) for opening her mind to the wider world.

“Before MSU, I used to focus only on my work; now I'm more open-minded. I’ve learned to improve myself by learning how to speak in public and become more confident. My takeaway lesson from my MSU education would be that it’s okay to keep your focus but remember also to keep an eye on all the positive things in your surroundings,” she concludes.
