World Mental Health Day on October 10 arrived this year at a time when life as we had known it has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many who have lost loved ones are managing their grief from not being able to say goodbye, and healthcare workers are providing their services in difficult circumstances. Three doctorpreneurs from Management and Science University (MSU) invest into meeting an anticipated increase in the need for psychosocial support.

“The pandemic opened my eyes to the importance of primary healthcare and the holistic role of medical personnel in confronting a crisis. I was involved in mass screenings organized by Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Johor along with Family Medicine Specialists and Medical Officers from all over the state in attempts to contain the spread of the infection. Our clinic also conducted site visits for mass screenings among foreign workers,” says Dr Azleen Alias of Primer Cherang Clinic Johor Bahru (PCCJB).

Picking up on Dr Azleen’s remarks is PCCJB co-owner Dr Ahmad Nazhrul’afif Mohd Zain.

“The significance of our clinic is that it looks like a spa cum 5-star hotel, because it was designed to provide the best family-friendly services in a mentally comforting ambience,” says Dr ‘Afif.

Presenting an unconventional interior that belies the serious capability within, the 24-hour Mega Boutique General Practitioner Clinic is the first of its kind in Johor Bahru. Aiming for the patient’s heart is its tagline ‘We Love, We Care’. The clinic’s Platelet Rich Plasma Intra-Articular Knee and Shoulder Joint injection for Osteoarthritis is already the talk of town at Damansara Aliff, where PCCJB is located within the Johor Bahru Metropolis.

Another joint owner is Dr Nik Ahmad Fadli Husni Nik Sharifullah, who has been best buds with Dr Azleen and Dr ‘Afif since their first year on the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at the MSU International Medical School (IMS) Bangalore campus.

Besting it in Bangalore

Making extraordinary, with an offshore learning experience

Continues Dr ‘Afif, “I knew Dr Azleen since Standard Three as we went to the same primary school and lived close to each other but we only started to become close friends in India. Working together running our own clinic had been a dream since our medical-school days. We met again after medical school and the clinic idea resurfaced. Here we are, three brains better than two, making our dream come true.”

Whilst Dr Fadli has better strength in clinical settings and management and Dr Azleen in public relations as well as damage control, Dr ‘Afif professes financial management savvy.

Recalling their Bangalore campus days, Dr Fadli, who is certified for Clinical Wound Care by the Malaysian Society of Wound Care Professionals (MSWCP) and the Asian Wound Care Association (AWCA), noted their invaluable learning experiences.

“The people and culture humbled us into being more grateful for the life we have. Despite the language barrier, we understood the hardships of the poor; and resolved to give them the best medical treatment possible,” he says.

And whilst his next pursuit is the Postgraduate Diploma in Dermatology from the Academy of Family Physician Malaysia and the Institute of Dermatology in Bangkok, Dr Fadli also envisions establishing a chain of clinics under the PCCJB brand and welcoming more MSUrians onboard. It may be a challenge like no other given the COVID-19 pandemic, but co-owner Dr Azleen returns to their alma mater for more inspiration.

“Ever since I became an MSU student in 2006, I have looked to the leadership of the University’s own president. Professor Tan Sri Dr Shukri's vision and perseverance make him our role model for entrepreneurship. The pandemic is a rough time for all of us, but it has also taught valuable lessons: the importance of backup plans, flexibility, and creativity in sustaining the business.
