Twenty-first-century South Korea is renowned for a globally influential phenomenon called the Korean wave or Hallyu – encompassing music as well as the moving art, the in for the hip and the cool across popular culture. From the campus club of the Management and Science University (MSU) Korean Cultural Association (KCA) comes an alumna who found her way to a South Korean career.

Having spent some years as a Freight Forwarder at INEX Co. Ltd in Busan, south of South Korea, Ooi Chew Yong knows the demands of her job only too well. In logistics, everything has to be flawlessly timed – no rehearsals, no retakes, no ambiguities – and she is in the company’s Export Department.

In charge of paperwork, Ooi’s typical 9-to-5 includes cargo packing, planning of container loading, and scheduling; among a myriad other things involved in the business of transporting goods around the world. On top of it all, she is pursuing a PhD in Shipping Management at Korea Maritime and Ocean University (KMOU).

“Freight forwarders have specialist knowledge of shipping types, packaging methods, and Free Trade Agreements (FTA). There are just so many parties involved, that you need to be on top of your communication,” remarks Ooi.

She credits the education that prepared her.

“I graduated MSU with the President Award of Excellence for my achievements on the Bachelor in Education (Hons) – TESL programme at MSU’s School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS). It’s a great programme that has shaped me into a good communicator, collaborator, and critical thinker. Whilst the teaching skills I gained have held me in good stead – I spent six months as a Malay Language and Malaysian Culture Instructor at the Busan Foundation for International Cooperation before graduating with a Master in Shipping Management in 2017 – the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, integrated with grammar and vocabulary, equipped me for mastery of the globally and widely accepted trade language that is English.”
