Art and Healing

Khairunnisa binti Mohd Izham, who recently graduated from Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMS), never thought that her interest in drawing buildings with a pen alone can turn out to be something big for her. It all started in 2018 when she had trouble sleeping during her second year of study and at that time, she found out that drawing had become her therapy.

She kept on practicing for almost 2 years and managed to sell her first art print last year, which was a pen sketch of the Palazzo Poli, a palace in Italy through her Twitter account, @Khai_Izham0119. Proud to call herself as freelance architectural and landscape artist, she is now focusing on making artworks and sell it as prints through online platform, selling original artworks and also taking commissions from clients.

Sharing her experiences during her study time in MSU, she said that “Personal Enrichment Competency (PEC) in MSU prepares students to be all rounded person. Other than academic achievements, students also learn on various skills that are beneficial for our upcoming future. As for me, entrepreneurship skills subject did give a huge impact on me. Making your own product and trying to promote it can be hard when you do not know or not even sure how to do it. Learning on strategic planning and making your products different from others will attract more people. In addition to that, by taking part in various university activities, gave me experiences on how to figure out and manage the task. So, from there I learnt on how to handle the stressful situations as a freelance artist in the best and organized way.”

“You need to have faith in your dream. Never stop working towards it. Even if you stumble and fall, use all you have to crawl, walk and run towards your goal. Never be afraid of mistakes and be brave to learn from them. Finally, have faith in yourself and God,” added Khairunnisa.

She also shared, “During this pandemic, nothing much we can do as of now. Outdoor activities and job opportunities are currently limited. However, that is not the excuse to sit around all day. Use that opportunity to explore things that you can do. Create alternative for your gain. Be productive and have courage to try. You never know you might discover something big!
