Fashion Talk with Danish Rizal

Being the Vice President of MSU’s Fashion Club, Danish Rizal is no stranger to MSU fashionistas especially. Currently undergoing an internship programme in one of the top fashion designers’ companies, Hatta Dolmat Design in Kuala Lumpur, Danish has achieved numerous magnificent achievements, despite the drastic changes of the current education system. The final year student of Diploma in Fashion Design at MSU have maintained an impressive 4.0 GPA for the past one and a half years. Read on as he sheds some truth on his journey as a fashion student and gives us his best advice.

  1. Why did you choose fashion design as your programme of choice?

Fashion Design was the foundation of my life. For me, expressing my inexhaustible creativity was an intrinsic need. Growing up, I always felt the need to look different. At young age, I began to sketch garments with hopes that someday I will become a fashion designer and my collection will be popular and worn across the globe.

  2. Congratulations on your recent achievement! Being shortlisted as the Top 20 of ‘Waste is Amazing Paper Couture Competition’ by Alam Flora Sdn Bhd must be exciting. Tell us your experience throughout the competition.

It was a tough journey to be shortlisted as the top 20 for this competition. I was offered by my lecturer to join this competition a day before the submission’s deadline, without wasting my time I pulled an all-nighter just to get my design done and to be submitted on time.

Once I have submitted, I was shocked as the deadline has extended and I thought to myself if only I knew I had more time, I would surely spend more effort in creating the design. I was lucky enough that my design was accepted and made it to the top 20 out of 82 participants. It was announced on the Alam Flora Sdn Bhd Official Facebook page.

  3. Tell us about the design!

The design was captivated by an architecture back into the old Chinese emperor era with the essences of mandarin oriental art. The design was inspired by the silhouette of a famous Chinese fashion designer named Guo Pei.

  5. Your best experience at MSU so far?

Personally for me, what I think might be the most interesting experience in MSU was being the spokesperson for Minister of Higher Education Malaysia, Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Dr.Noraini Ahmad during the International Fashion Collection 2021 fashion show. I was one of the presenters who had the chance to talk face-to-face to her and explained about the collection created for UEDA College of Fashion, Japan.

  6. Your favorite inspirational quote that you live by?

“Make your life a masterpiece, imagine no limitations on what you can be, have or do.”

  7. How are you coping with online learning so far? Any tips for your friends out there?

Online learning is hard as my practical courses rely 90% on the facilities. I would say manage your time wisely as nowadays we need to expect the unexpected. Do your best in your studies and always move forward because small progress is still progress. Keep in touch with everyone, always communicate with one another, because communication will forever be the key to success. Take care of your mental health by taking breaks in between works.

  8. Your advice to those considering to pursue fashion in the future?

Fashion is hard especially during this trying times. You need to have a great passion to ensure that your motivation will drive you till the end. Garments cannot be created in a blink of an eye; it requires a long process of thorough research and development just to create one single masterpiece. It is surely tiring indeed, but the end products are the things that brings us contentment in the end. Do what you love and always put your heart in it because things get easier when you do something that you love.
