Should you wear sunscreen indoors?

Sunscreen Day is celebrated on the 27th May yearly, designed to make sure that people are aware of the importance of wearing sunscreen. The Malaysian movement control order (MCO) requires you to be at home most of the time. You study online, indulge a lazy Sunday, binge-watch your favourite show, and you most probably have no intention of brushing your hair, much less putting on sunscreen.

But did you know that UV rays can pass through glass windows? Hence, it is important to wear SPF both indoors and outdoors, just like we normally wear sunscreen on days out. Read on and find out why.

  1. Blue light from our screens

Whether you are connected all day or choose to detach from all your devices, the reality is that we can’t run from being exposed to blue light. A large portion of your day is spent behind a screen be it computers, cell phones, or television. How is sunscreen helping? Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in a sunscreen (although not all sunscreens do) give you protection from the blue light that can cause cell shrinkage, skin aging and pigmentation.

  2. UVA Rays through windows

We always take our skin health so lightly while we are at home, but our skin is also sensitive to a range of infections that are not just caused by the sun. UVA rays are one of the reasons for long-wavelength penetration through glass, which can damage collagen, create wrinkles and aging symptoms, and raise the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens will protect your skin from diseases that are damaging to your skin's health.

To sufficiently protect your skin, experts recommend sunscreens that contain SPF 30 or above and broad-spectrum ones. Especially indoors, you must ensure adequate levels of sunscreen for the day. To be safe, use sunscreen every day, whether you intend to go out or not. Your skin will appreciate you in the longer term.
