Before The Canvas

featuring Putri Sarah Irdina

Putri Sarah Irdina is one of the brightest graphic designers among many at MSU. Twice awarded the President’s List Award so far, Sarah will be showcasing some of her designs and the stories behind them.

The 23-year-old student from Kuala Lumpur is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design. Her long-time love for design started when she was 13 and it began as a mere hobby. One of her first projects was designing her high school’s yearbook with the school’s editorial board.

Sarah tells us that studying graphic design is a lot of fun despite the packed schedule faced by the students. “Our programme is all about creating visual content to deliver messages to our target audience. This programme teaches different areas of graphic design to cultivate creativity in us as future designers, while finding the right pathway through assessments provided at MSU. It has been very interesting getting to learn different subjects every semester”.

This course has helped Sarah come to find her own interests and potential career paths in her bright future. Let’s take a look at Sarah’s remarkable piece so far:

Pudu

“This was the final project for my Information Design class by Madam Mazidah. Our task was to design a travel guidebook based on our chosen district in Kuala Lumpur. I highlighted Pudu because it’s the best representation of the locals. Pudu’s rawness and history separate this neighbourhood from other fancy districts and I wanted to embody that feeling in my designs hence the contrasting colours and retro geometric patterns to mimic the nostalgia. This guidebook consists of its history and top attractions that could be beneficial and informative to the readers. Overall, I really enjoyed designing this project as editorial design is one of my favourite graphic design fields.”

KeHati

“This was a freelance work that was connected to me through a friend of mine. The overall communication and meeting process went smoothly as my client was straightforward and specific about his logo. This particular logo was one of the choices that I briefed to Kehati. Although the end logo chosen isn’t this one, but this was my favourite out of the three that I presented as I really thought it embodied KeHati as a traditional wear brand with its femininity and floral elements.”

Childhood Throwback

“This was one of my long-time projects that I’m very proud of. For my Typography class during Diploma, I was required to design typography illustration and somehow, I was inspired to illustrate the cartoons that I grew up enjoying. I wasn’t always a big fan of illustration in particular when I was younger but somehow this project was a huge satisfaction to me. Every single illustration was hand-drawn on graph paper before vectorised on Adobe Illustrator.”

Idaris Homes

“This is another Kuala Lumpur guidebook that I did during my internship for Idaris Homes. Idaris Homes is a service apartment near KLCC and my director wanted to release a KL guidebook that would be useful for their customers. Our company is a huge fan of minimal design and that’s what I wished to display for this editorial guidebook. Photos are originally taken by my supervisor while I did the map illustration and design. I really enjoyed the creative direction of this project as my director really trusted us to handle it from scratch.”

With MSU not open to students yet, Sarah uses this time to ensure that she attends every class, improving her personal portfolio and preparing for her upcoming internship. But she’s eager to come back to meet her lecturers and friends. And to get her favourite Subway cookies on campus!
