Hello everyone! My name is Leana Sharvinee Johan (just call me Leana), and I am going to take you through a day in my life as a first year student of Diploma in Medical Assistant (DMA) at Management and Science University (MSU).

I chose this course because my ambition is to be a successful healthcare-giver. I had initially been interested in MSU’s Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS) programme, but I decided to go with my current course since the time for me to finish is shorter (can’t wait to work in hospitals!) and I want to learn about healthcare from the very beginning. I will surely continue my studies in MBBS in future. I have everything planned out!

Read about Dr Grace Vani, an MSU alumni who entered MBBS through DMLT. Other medical-related programmes at MSU: DMS,BMSBCT.

In the morning

Being a DMA student requires a lot of focus and study time. To make sure every day is a productive day I go to bed early at night to make sure I have enough beauty sleep, and wake up at 6AM. After a light exercise, I start preparing everything I need for the day and then take a shower and get ready for my 8AM class. From my place to MSU it’s just a 10-minute walk and I usually walk with my friends to class.

I also usually take my breakfast before I go to class but I don’t have to worry about breakfast since the lecturers always give us a few minutes’ break during a lecture for us to go get something light at the University’s convenience store U-Shop.

One thing you should know about MSU is that the lecturers are awesome and caring. They understand that you need energy to absorb all the facts and to stay focused during the lab practicals.

In the afternoon

Every day we have 2 hours’ lunch break before starting the next class. Lunch break is my favourite time of the day because I get eat with my friends and catch up with them. I usually go to The Hub for my lunch. Its big, it’s new and it’s the best leisure spot on-campus! It offers many choices of food but my favourite is the chicken rice and Indian food (delicious)!

My friends and I usually use this time to bond. We talk about classes and assignments, and make plans for the weekend. After we are done with our meals, we perform our prayers at the MSU Islamic Cultural Centre (ICC) and proceed to the afternoon classes.

Evening

Most days, my classes end at 6PM, by which time I usually am tuckered out. I will head straight home and take a few minutes to rest before I take a long shower. After that, I spend some time to relax and watch television or watch videos on Youtube. I usually eat my dinner around this time as well.

Now that my mind is relaxed, it’s time to recap the day. I take my notebook out and pin up on my board any important things I need to remember so I won’t forget them. I proceed with some revision before I head to bed.

Those are pretty much what I do in my daily routine as an MSUrian. I belong to the Diploma in Medical Assistant Club and I often join in at the activities. Other than that, I also go to meetings with my mentor to stay ahead of things.

I love the mentor-mentee system here. I would say it’s one of the best things about MSU. I am very close to my mentor and I always go to my mentor for advice when I have any problems. MSU mentors are kind; they treat you with respect.
