Advancing Staff and Student Sustainability Literacy at MSU
At Management and Science University (MSU), sustainability is more than a principle, it is a daily practice embedded within the university's teaching, operations, and culture. The university takes deliberate action to ensure that both academic and professional staff members, as well as students, are well-equipped with sustainability knowledge and skills.
1. Assessment Tool for Sustainability Literacy (Staff)
MSU has established structured internal certification programmes that embed environmental and sustainability themes into staff development.
Internal Assessment Tools and Evidence
Through programs such as:
- New Certificate of Teaching Skills (CTS)
- Certificate in Handling Alumni, Mentoring and Progression (CHAMP)
MSU trains both new and existing faculty and administrative staff on modules which incorporate relevant topics such as:
- Outcome-Based Education (OBE)
- Material Development
- Pedagogy
- Event Management
- Counselling Skills
- Technology Tools & Digital Content
- Sustainability & Environment
These modules, conducted by academic leaders and experienced trainers, include interactive workshops, reflective learning, and practical portfolios. They indirectly assess staff awareness, teaching integration, and content delivery in line with SDG goals, especially SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
For instance:
- The CTS Cycle 1 / 2025, held across April and May 2025, involves qualified trainers delivering full-day modules that promote sustainable educational practices.
- The CHAMP Cycle 1 / 2025, conducted from February to April 2025, includes “Event Management” and “Counselling Skills”, modules designed to instill inclusive, responsible, and sustainability-conscious management approaches.
These certifications act as MSU’s internal tools for measuring and nurturing staff literacy in sustainability topics through structured training and performance-based assessments.
2. Annual Mandatory Environmental Sustainability Training
Mandatory Staff Training (4 – 8 hours)
Yes, MSU provides annual dedicated training on environmental aspects of sustainability for both academic and professional staff members. These training initiatives are outlined on the official staff training platform:
👉 Staff Training Portal
MSU’s staff training programs focus on:
- Sustainable campus management
- Green technology
- Digital tools and content development
- Responsible waste reduction
- Eco-conscious event planning
Staff are trained through both on-site certification modules and digital platforms. Key sessions such as “Technology Tools & Digital Content” and “Teaching Practice Briefing” help equip faculty to integrate sustainability into teaching and operations effectively.
3. Internal Assessment Tool for Student Sustainability Literacy: Personal Enrichment Competency (PEC)
MSU's commitment to cultivating balanced, holistic, and well-rounded graduates is exemplified through the Personal Enrichment Competency (PEC) subject. This extensive course is dedicated to balancing intellectual capacity and interpersonal capability, instrumental for both academic requisites and personal welfare among students.
The seventh edition of the MSU PEC Carnival 2024, serving as the culminating event for the 14-week programme, included 7,443 students and 145 trainers across seven faculties and schools. The PEC for the semester featured diverse and innovative major projects across 20 programmes, concentrating on cultural heritage. Notably, the projects included:
- Traditional values & heritage magazines focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Heritage & halal exhibition emphasizing Halal Fundamentals
- Campaigns themed “The Craft Preservation” enhancing Communication Skills
- Video documentation of traditional kuih integrating Information Technology Skills
These projects not only fostered creativity and teamwork but also embedded sustainability concepts, aligning with MSU's objective of nurturing environmentally responsible citizens.

4. Student Training and Awareness
In parallel, MSU ensures that students are also actively engaged in sustainability through the following platform:
👉 Student Community Wellbeing
Students benefit from:
- Green campus campaigns
- Community service projects aligned with SDGs
- Environmental awareness workshops
- Volunteering and leadership training
These initiatives are often delivered by MSU’s Learning Development Centre, faculty clubs, and sustainability coordinators across departments, fostering an ecosystem where students grow into environmentally responsible citizens.
MSU’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its consistent, integrated training approach, ensuring that both students and staff are equipped to champion environmental responsibility in their personal and professional lives.
