Malaysian history is heavily rooted in the months of August and September. The country has made great strides over the previous sixty years, from declaring independence to forming a federation. It is imperative that the present and future generations be instilled with the same unwavering courage and resolve that our forefathers and leaders showed in building our country. Management and Science University (MSU) goes further in appreciating and commemorating the Merdeka events through the annual MSU MyDay.

Organized by MSU’s Student and Career Development (SCD) Department, MSU MyDay 2023 saw over two thousand and five hundred local and international MSUrians in the Chancellor Hall of Shah Alam campus, as well as via Zoom E-Meeting for MSU offshore campus, MSU Bangalore; affiliates MSU College (Seremban, Ipoh, Penang, Sungai Petani, Kota Bharu, Terengganu, Johor Bahru, Sabah, and Sarawak); MSU Learning Centres (MLC Sentral); and MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC).

Themed ‘Malaysia Madani: Tekad Perpaduan, Penuhi Harapan (Determination in Unity, Fulfilling Hope),’ the celebratory launch had myriad faculties and departments dressed in traditional attire in four colours of the Malaysian national flag, Jalur Gemilang: red, yellow, white, and blue.

Signifying courage (red) were the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS), International Medical School (IMS), School of Pharmacy (SPH), Quality Assurance and Audit Centre (QAAC), Academic Office (AO), Business Enterprise Development (BED), Strategic Governance, Global Affairs (GA), and Yayasan MSU (YMSU).

The School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS), Engagement and Enrolment (E&E), MSU College Shah Alam (MSUC SA), Human Resource Department, IT Lab, Centre for Fundamental Studies (CFS), Continuing and Extended Education Centre (CEdEC), Campus Infrastructure Development (CID), and Media and Strategic Communication (MSC) painted the CH yellow, symbolising the official colour of our country’s rulers.

The sign of purity—white—was represented by the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA), Student and Career Development (SCD), Research Management Centre (RMC), School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Graduate School of Management (GSM), Registrar’s Office (RO), Science Lab, MSUMC, President Office, and Exams Department.

Spreading harmony through unique shades of blue were the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP), Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE), Software Engineering and Digital Innovation Center (SENDI), Finance Department, Library and Resource Centre (LRC), Purchasing and Procurement, Vice-Chancellor’s Office (VC), and Centres of Excellence (COE).

The opening performance, encompassing Tarian Inang, Joget, and Zapin, was presented by the students from the Performing Arts and Cultural Club (PACC). The team had achieved a notable victory by winning first place in the category for Institut Pengajian Tinggi Swasta (IPTS)—private higher educational institutions—in the Festival of Colours of the World at the University Teknologi PETRONAS, Perak. On top of that, the team also emerged as the winner for the Best Costume Award, the Best Choreography Award, and the Overall Champion for the IPTS category.

Emphasising the consequentiality of cultural competence among the audience is the MSU President, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

“For all of us on campus, MyDay is a month-long celebration. All faculties and schools run highly effective events, and you should participate to the best of your ability. To move forward, one must develop cultural competence. Through these types of initiatives, a sense of community may be fostered, making it much simpler to overcome the underlying divide. Everyone has the right to their own opinion, but we must all work together for the good of the country.”

Several MSU students from all of Malaysia's ethnic groups—Malay, Chinese, Sabahan, Kadazan, Indian, Indigenous, and Sarawakian—dressed in traditional garb to celebrate the country's cultural diversity. Professor Dr Shukri then officiated MSU MyDay 2023 by presenting the accessories needed to complete the costume.

Through the magic of movement and music, students orchestrated captivating performances that resonated with the audience's sense of shared belonging and togetherness.

Batrisyia Delilah Syamsul Badrin, a Bachelor in Psychology (Honours) student and the MSU Facilitator, swore the Oath of Rukun Negara alongside faculty representatives.

From the 1st of August until the 16th of September, MSUrians will keep themselves busy with a variety of campaigns organized by each faculty and MSU Colleges across the country: MyDay Mangrove Project @ Port Klang (FMBP); Merdeka Warrior Race and Merdeka Hike Edition 2.0 (SCD); MY02: Tree Planting at Sungai Kanching (SHCA); CSR (Environment): Live, Love, Recycle (FISE); Merdeka Sukan Rakyat (FHLS); MyCoral Merdeka Dive (IMS); Poetry Recital Competition (SPH); MyMadani@ Animalsprotector (SESS); MSUMC Merdeka Fiesta 2023 (MSUMC); Sayembara Puisi Merdeka 2023 (MSUC SA); Running Man Jalur Gemilang (MSUC Sungai Petani); Jelajah Merdeka Santuni Asnaf (MSUC Kota Bahru); and MSU Mentoring Gah Merdeka (MSUC Sarawak) are among the programmes put together to instil patriotism and enliven the spirit of Merdeka.
