Cardiovascular disease holds the grim distinction of being the leading cause of death worldwide. This category encompasses various conditions that impact the heart and blood vessels, including heart attacks, strokes, and heart failures, collectively responsible for claiming the lives of over 20.5 million individuals each year.

In observance of World Heart Day, marked on September 29th every year, the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) launched an awareness campaign dedicated to addressing the substantial impact of cardiovascular diseases, a critical non-communicable health issue.

As part of MSU Health Science Week 2023, various booths were established to showcase cardiovascular diseases and the diagnostic equipment employed for these medical conditions. These booths were organised by students pursuing a Bachelor in Cardiovascular Technology, and a Diploma in Medical and Health Science, along with students in the Diploma and Bachelor of Nursing programmes.

Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, President of MSU, made his way around to each of these booths.

In honour of World Heart Day 2.023, under the theme ‘Use Heart for Every Heart,’ the MSU President conducted a symbolic heart transplant. Additionally, he presided over the formal inauguration of the upcoming conference, the 1st International Conference on Cardiovascular and Quality of Life (iConCiq) 2024, set to take place on January 27 and 28, 2024, at The Everly Putrajaya. This conference represents a partnership between the Malaysian Society of Cardiovascular Technologist (MSCVT) and the Institute for Medical Research Malaysia (IMR).

Themed Cardiovascular Wellness: Nurturing Hearts, Enriching Lives, the 1st iConCiq strives to lead this movement by convening a diverse array of experts to encourage collaboration, spark fresh insights, and elevate global standards in cardiovascular healthcare.

The celebration of World Heart Day 2023 marked a significant milestone as Professor Mohd Shukri installed the first Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on campus. This AED will be readily accessible to MSUrians in case of emergencies. Additionally, two more AEDs are scheduled to be installed across the campus, further enhancing safety for all MSUrians.
