Malaysia has four World Heritage Sites; two natural (Gunung Mulu National Park on the island of Borneo in the state of Sarawak, and Kinabalu Park on the northern end of Borneo Island in the state of Sabah), and two historical (Archaeological Heritage of the Lenggong Valley, as well as Melaka and George Town, Historic Cities of the Straits of Malacca).
George Town is the capital city of Penang, located northeast of the island. A multicultural port city that was once a Straits of Malacca trading hub, it was founded by Sir Francis Light and named after King George III of Great Britain. Its British colonial buildings as well as Chinese shop-houses and mosques set the scene for a UNESCO World Heritage Site Day celebration this year by students of MSU College Penang.
Six landmarks were visited on their heritage trail; St George Church, Masjid Kapitan Kling, Khoo Kongsi, Sri Mariamman Temple, Fort Cornallis, and Cenotaph. Leading the congregation was MSU Senior Vice-President for Endowment and Communication Dato’ Rosli Yusof.
Fostering appreciation of cultural values that need to be preserved and protected for the future, with the aim of delivering SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 4 (Quality Education), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), the George Town excursion provided valuable lessons in global citizenry rooted in heritage.
The MSU College Penang Heritage Walk 2022 was sponsored by Srishti, Joby, N4 Camera Store, Fuji Film, Proforce Squad, Uni Hygiene, Suria Trading, Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Ascott Gurney Penang, DYMNG Engineering, Hompton Hotel, Kimberly Hotel, and Jen Penang Georgetown by Shangri-La.
