Dr Danielle Valerinna Charles had aspired to be a petroleum engineer because she wanted to see the world, just like her grandfather, who had been going places working for Shell. Fueling that aspiration was her secondary-school teacher’s encouragement for the teenager’s aptitude in Physics and Additional Mathematics to be put to good use by the Oil & Gas industry. Fast forward to May 2023, ahead of the 31st Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU), Dr Dan, as she is popularly known, instead led the graduating class of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS); pledging caring and healing.

“I will remember that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug. I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart or a cancerous growth, but a human being whose illness may affect the patient’s family and economic stability. I will remember that my responsibility shall include such related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.”

Forty-seven graduating doctors – 16 males and 31 females – took the oath on Friday the 19th of May; 39 from the MSU Shah Alam Campus and eight from the MSU Bangalore Campus – among whom was the offshore campus’s first female president of the International Medical School (IMS) Association (IMSA), Dr Nur Najihah Zokrie. Dr Daniella Valerinna Charles herself is the MSU Student Representatives Council (SRC) 2022/2023 president who represented Management and Science University on the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia programme Jelajah Aspirasi Mahasiswa Antarabangsa to London, Paris, and Amsterdam.

The graduating MBBS Class of 2023 left with a parting message by MSU president Professor Tan Sri Dato' Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

"Just as the education landscape has changed, especially post-COVID, so has the landscape of medicine. Yet the core remains. Stick with it; the why of your chosen qualification, the what of your contribution, and the how of your delivery."
