The history of accounting traces back to the middle of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century in Great Britain during the Industrial Revolution, the period when significant innovation and mechanisation came to the fore. The portal to this new niche was made passable by business paradigm shifts and the obligation of shareholders and bondholders to be informed about the financial security of the enterprises in which they have capitalised. Centuries later, today, accountants are fundamentally regarded as financial leaders, regulating the strategic trajectory and advancement of an organisation.

In observance of International Accounting Day, commemorated on November 10 worldwide every year, the Young Accountant Club (YAC) of the Faculty of Business Management & Professional Studies (FBMP) hosted the MSU Accounting Student Convention (MASCon) 2023 from November 8 to November 9.

The University gives prominence to industry-embedded teaching and learning processes by integrating existing collaborative learning environments into industry embeddings in an endeavour to promote global collaboration. Networking and practical experiences are critical foundations, as well as additional resources that are capable of bolstering the confidence and self-assurance of undergraduates as they navigate their way through the vast world of the ever-competitive accounting field.

Themed ‘Navigating the Next Generation of Accounting Professionals,’ MASCon 2023 equipped students with the knowledge and soft skills that are indispensable to becoming professional accountants, providing an avenue for engagement between students and industry, proffering opportunities for students to gather information from industry experts, and raising awareness of the value of technology in the wake of the pandemic.

Over two hundred students from the Foundation in Business (FIB), Diploma in Accounting (DIA), Bachelor in Accountancy (BIA), and Bachelor in Accounting and Finance (BAF) benefitted from the two-day event.

The first day of the convention began with a mock interview session with industry representatives from Ernst & Young (EY), Pall Corporation, and Huntsman Corporation. A total of forty-eight students took part in this segment, who had the privilege of gaining first-hand experience of undergoing actual corporate interviews.

Unfolding the afternoon was the Accounting Olympiad, a quiz competition hosted for one hundred and twenty-three students. Categories 1, 2, and 3 of the Accounting Olympiad were made up of participants undertaking Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) 1, 2, and 3 subjects, respectively, under BIA. The champions for Category 1 were Durgashree Balasubramanian, Kaasitra Ramesh, and Filzah Husna Mohd Mokhtar. Category 2 was conquered by Vishvak Gokarun Mukunan, Ahmad Nazreen Mohamad Shamsuri, and Muhammad Zafri Hazim Zadi@Zaidi. Securing the top three places for the third category were Sofea Adlina Shafreen, Puteri Sarah Hanim Zabri, and Taanushini Machap Das.

The second day of the convention encompassed five industrial talks and commenced with an Alumni Forum: Careers with BIA Degree, by BIA alumni, who were also the recipients of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) Awards. Accounting Industry Session by Hisham Halim, the Transfer Pricing Partner of Ernst & Young Tax Consultants, highlighted the future of accountancy through the Prospect for Future Direction of Accounting Graduates. Taking the lead at the Education Sponsor Session was Mohd Afifi Rozani, the Business Development Executive from the Malaysia Professional Accountancy Centre (MyPAC) via Professional Accounting Journey with MyPAC.

Taking up the second half of the day was the Accounting Professional Programme.
