Nurses are one of the central frontliners of the nation. Working in complex and rapidly changing healthcare environments, as far as life and death are concerned, nurses ought to embody critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills to deliver safe, evidence-based care, make informed decisions, and respond effectively to a wide range of medical situations. In this ever-evolving healthcare landscape, taking a step ahead and providing a cross-border opportunity is the Management and Science University (MSU).

Led by the Continuing and Extended Education Centre (CEdEC), nineteen nursing students from the Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University of Japan attended a one-day Nursing Short Course at MSU on September 20 at MSU and MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC).

The central objective of this short course is to bridge healthcare education and cultural competency. By gaining insights into nursing education and training methods and comparing the healthcare systems in Japan and Malaysia in terms of organisation, funding, and care delivery, it aims to create a paradigm shift. This shift promotes cultural comprehension and sensitivity through engagement with students and healthcare professionals from different cultural backgrounds. Ultimately, it supports the development of cultural competency skills necessary for providing culturally sensitive and competent care to diverse patient populations.

A talk by the MSUMC and MSU Nursing Team highlighted topics such as medical tourism, patient care skills, the medical environment, nursing career paths, and opportunities for foreigners in Malaysia. The programme also included an MSUMC Tour, a meeting with MSU Nursing undergraduates, an exhibition of MSU Health Science Week 2023, and a talk by the Malaysia Rubber Council on Selecting the Right Gloves and Managing Infection Control. These platforms were organised to provide nursing students from Gifu Shotoku Gakuen University with deeper insights into Malaysia’s healthcare and cultural landscape.
