Emphasizing inclusivity and participation rather than competition is the Sukan Rakyat. Catering to people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, with the central goal of promoting physical activity, health, and social interaction within the community, Sukan Rakyat often comprises traditional sports and games, passed down through generations and are deeply embedded in the cultural heritage of the local communities. Sustaining the heritage through Batu Seremban is the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) of Management and Science University (MSU).

The Healthcare Professional, Optometry & Visual Science, and Diagnostic & Applied Health Science departments of FHLS joined forces to celebrate Malaysia Day. Their initiative aimed at promoting cultural traditions and enhancing community engagement while aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goal (UNSDG) focusing on Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11). Moreover, this event played a pivotal mentoring role within the faculty, strengthening the dynamic bond between lecturers and students.

The event was officially inaugurated by Dato’ Rosli Yusof, the Senior Vice President of Endowment and Communication, accompanied by Associate Professor Dr. Sairah Abd Karim, the Dean of FHLS, and Dr. Haniza Harun, the Deputy Dean of FHLS.

Sukan Rakyat held a prominent place in our history many years ago. This presents a valuable opportunity for all of you, including our international students, to immerse yourselves in and appreciate the significance and joy inherent in the traditional game known as Batu Seremban. It brings me great joy to witness the revival of this game, and I encourage all of us to integrate our cultural heritage into mainstream activities.”

Sukan Rakyat 2023 commenced with an energetic Zumba session, led by FHLS lecturers and students, setting the tone for a day filled with fun and healthy activities. The highlight of the event was the traditional art of crafting Batu Seremban, offering a unique blend of physical activity and cultural enrichments. Students and lecturers donned kain batik, a cherished traditional textile. Batik holds a significant place in Malaysia’s cultural heritage, serving as a vibrant tapestry that mirrors the nation’s rich and diverse cultural landscape.

Batu Seremban necessitates a combination of sewing proficiency and imaginative flair. Both the lecturers and students were encouraged to exercise their creative freedom when shaping and embellishing their Batu Seremban, all while upholding the standards of precision and neatness in the sewing process. Essential tools and materials are integral to the art of crafting Batu Seremban sets. The FHLS community used green beans (used as counters), and kain batik (the fabric for crafting pouches), along with a needle and thread.

The game was assessed in two categories: 'Most Creative Batu Seremban' and 'Most Neat & Tidy Batu Seremban.' Taking the top three spots in the 'Most Creative' category were the mentor-mentee team of Noor Azimah Ahmad (1st place), Tay Giat Sing (2nd place), and Eddy Abdul Raub (3rd place). Meanwhile, securing the top three prizes in the 'Neatest & Tidy Batu Seremban' category were Dr. Muhammad Afiq Khairil Anuar (1st place), Maryam Amiruddin (2nd place), and Nor Azeera Mohd Ali (3rd place).

A photography contest was held for the students, and the winners were Keertna Sutharsan, pursuing a Bachelor in Forensic Science (1st place); Nurbalqis Hani Badrol Zaman, pursuing a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (2nd place); and Sheikh Harith Din Sheikh Noor Din, studying for a Bachelor in Occupational Safety and Health (3rd place).

Jantzen Company, a prominent mineral water provider, offered sponsorship for the FHLS Sukan Rakyat 2023 event. Their generous contribution included fifteen cartons of mineral water.

Sukan Rakyat 2023 stands as a testament to the integration of fitness and culture, bringing together communities and promoting a comprehensive approach to well-being. This unique major mentoring highlighted the commitment to a healthier lifestyle and the preservation of Malaysia’s cultural heritage.
