The white coat stands for an essential aspect of students’ medical education, serving as a sign of professionalism, compassion, and the trust they need to establish with their patients.

The International Medical School (IMS) of the Management and Science University (MSU) recently marked a significant milestone by hosting its first in-person White Coat Ceremony since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The ceremony unfolded at the Performing Arts Theatre (PAT), where 187 first-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students from the April and October 2023 cohorts participated. Among them, 41 students belonged to the April cohort, while 146 were from the October cohort. The diverse group included international students hailing from countries such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, France, Yemen, Syria, Sudan, and Jordan.

The senior management and academic members of the faculty assisted first-year students in donning their white lab coats, a symbol of the medical field and the imminent start of their medical training, during the White Coat Ceremony.

MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Abd Yajid officially extended a warm welcome, urging the freshmen to cultivate a global mindset and step beyond their comfort zones.

“The current medical landscape has undergone tremendous transformation in the post-pandemic era, embracing widespread digitalization and embedding technology into every dimension. Adopting soft skills and diverse experiences is crucial, apart from gaining clinical expertise. Instilling a global perspective will empower you to make a meaningful contribution.”
