Privilege is invisible, oftentimes overlooked. Its nature being that until we learn how we benefit from it, only then do we begin to recognize it. For Sharul Ikmal Mohd Sukkeri, lack of it has never stood in his way to anything. Born with a postural deformity that put a bend in his legs and consequently a cane in one hand, he went on to clinch the Chancellor Gold Medal Award on his graduation day at the 27th Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU).

With his condition, Sharul believed that Management would be his best-fit career. After all, throughout childhood, he had seen his mother working in the industry. Encouraged by his teachers in high school at SMK Sierramas, he visited MSU and loved what he saw. Added to that the various global exposure programmes offered through the University’s GLP, GMP, and GIP; respectively the Global Leadership Programme, the Global Mobility Programme, and the Global Internship Programme; and his mind was made.

The student from MSU’s September 2015 intake excelled on the Diploma in Management programme at the Faculty of Business Management and Professional Studies (FBMP), and went on to receive the Academic Award at the 23rd Convocation Ceremony of Management and Science University (MSU). Next he wanted to expand his knowledge to how businesses are managed globally, hence the natural progression to Bachelor in International Business (Hons) at FBMP with the Academic Award’s scholarship.

“My career goal is to work in a multinational organization and manage business operations around the globe. That’s where I see myself in the next five years,” says the 25-year-old.

Armed with impressive co-curricular credentials on top of continued academic excellence, which include bagging Best Focus Presenter at the ASEAN Airlangga Youth Cultural Conference 2018 in Indonesia, receiving the President Appreciation of Leadership and Sportmanship (PALS) Award 2019, an A in every personal competency enrichment course he took, and making the Dean’s List every semester, it was small wonder that despite the MCO Sharul Ikmal managed to secure, in October 2020 – at the peak of the COVID-19 situation in Malaysia – the position of Junior Commercial Manager at Intelligent Money Sdn Bhd in Kuala Lumpur’s Bangsar district.

“My MSU education was an eye-opening first-hand experience of what’s happening in the industry. The knowledge and skills I needed were all there, built into the University’s industry and entrepreneurship ecosystems. The industry visits were especially valuable; as were the community engagements with Orang Asli, orphans, and the urban poor, and the environmental appreciation. I grabbed every character-building opportunity I could; among them, as Programme Manager of the MSU Environmental and Sustainability Project (MESP) FBMP Club Representative 2019, MSU Representative to the National Student Council 2019, and Vice-President of the Raise Your Idea, Not Your Voice programme. Learning to lead teams as well as ceremonies, coordinating and facilitating teamwork on committees, these are what I take with me now from my alma mater.”

Sharul Ikmal Mohd Sukkeri will be making his way to the Master in Business Administration (MBA) programme at MSU’s Graduate School of Management (GSM) on the Chancellor Gold Medal Award scholarship.
