The title Ir, which stands for Ingenieur, is derived from the Latin for ‘to contrive’ and ‘cleverness’. It also means that the holder is qualified to a Master’s degree in engineering.
Closely linked to technology, engineering has played a huge part in technological advances such as computers and medical machines. Healthcare, for example, has improved largely thanks to advancements in medical technology by engineers.
Professional engineers are bound by a code of ethics governing integrity, objectivity, competence, confidentiality, and behavior. It states that in fulfilling their professional duties, engineers shall hold paramount the public’s safety, health, and welfare, perform services only in areas of their competence, and issue public statements objectively and truthfully.
Working his way towards a registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is Management and Science University (MSU) alumnus Syed Aziz Syed Azmi.
Now a Project Engineer at machine-generated backup-power provider Anjur Ekar, Syed Aziz had graduated with a Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Electrical and Electronic) (Honours) from MSU. He started out as a Project Coordinator soon after graduating, handling the Ampang Line Light Rail Transit for a year. Promoted to his current position in 2016, he counts the EkoCheras Mall, the Bank Negara Malaysia Johor branch, the The Exchange 106 Kuala Lumpur, and the TNB Mobile Generator Set among his projects portfolio.
Says he of his engineering career thus far, “The biggest challenge is always timeline. While we must always strictly follow it to avoid completion delay, factors such as material delivery, cost-impact, and design changes cannot be avoided and are bound to affect the project timeline.”
On his choice of Management and Science University (MSU), Syed Aziz names the campus community culture with all its compelling learning experiences as his hook.
“Working together on a problem can switch on the best in people, and my fellow students as well as the academic community at MSU were very supportive and motivating, always ready to collaborate. I had the best lecturers on every course of my engineering programmes at the Faculty of Information Sciences and Engineering (FISE), and the learning experiences built my soft skills. I became a lot more understanding and punctual, and I learned to optimize my critical thinking skills. It has helped me grow for the better, at work and in life.”
