Just imagine the possibility that one could step foot across various continents in the world, be everywhere, and gaze upon the wonders of the world. For some, this notion nuances the premise of the 2004 American adventure comedy film, adapted from the Vernian masterpiece “Around the World in 80 Days." Surprisingly, this nuance has somewhat become a motivating factor for 27-year-old Muhammad Aiman Hamdani, Md. Sallehuddin, to embark on a transformative journey that transcends textbooks and classrooms. Aiman, who recently graduated with a Bachelor in Hospitality and Tourism Management (Hons) from Management and Science University (MSU), is fueled by an unquenchable passion for tourism and travel adventures as he finds solace in the promising and blooming career prospects of this industry post-pandemic.

For Aiman, the decision to venture into hospitality and tourism management was more than just an academic choice merely influenced by Hollywood adaptations; it was also a passionate pursuit inspired by a shared interest in overseas exploration with his family.

“I used to admire a popular Hollywood film, ‘Around the World in 80 Days’, and I was personally hinged to the fact that one could circumnavigate and lay eyes on various places of interest and discover the tantalising beauty of the world's wonders. It did not end there. I have also come to realise that my family is also as compassionate and enthusiastic about travel as I am. We were enjoying the scenic view of bustling cities from England to Turkey and indulging ourselves with the unique interpolation of cultures in Thailand and Singapore,” he said.

Aiman’s dreams extend beyond the traditional career path. He envisions himself as one of those job creators, as mentioned by MSU’s President, YBhg. Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, aspiring to pioneer his own venture in the rising tourism and hospitality landscape and not limiting himself by being complacent. He corroborates MSU’s path to excellence as an eye-opening resolve; as he stipulated, it is “the one that goes beyond the conventional." The curriculum offered is not confined to generic ticketing practice alone; instead, it delves deeper into the intricate realms of hospitality and managerial knowledge.

The application of knowledge and theoretical wisdom in real-world settings became possible through the MSU’s Global Mobility Programme (GMP), wherein Aiman found himself immersed in the vibrant and vivid livelihood of Cambodia in his four-day educational trip.

“Apart from in-class coursework and conventional learning and teaching methods, I also learned a lot about other cultures, and for that, I saw the value of cultural competencies as being held dearest in the hearts of all MSUrians. Through GMP, I did not just learn about tourism and the vast tapestry of cultures; I lived it. Tangible experiences are always satisfying compared to those that textbooks could only hint at,” he added about his trip to Cambodia during his study.

In any educational journey, mentors play a pivotal role. Aiman found inspiration from his respected mentor, Mr. Azizul Jamaluddin from the School of Hospitality and Creative Arts (SHCA), who helped him traverse his transformative journey. For Aiman, the unwavering motivational and educational support, combined with professional guidance from his mentor and a few other lecturers he has known over the years, has significantly improved his exposure to contemporary industrial settings and rejuvenated his spirit to become a holistic individual, well-rounded and future-ready to serve in the tourism and hospitality realms.

“MSU is not just a university; it is a growing entrepreneurial hub in Malaysia, serving as a nurturing ground for dreams and future entrepreneurs to put their theoretical knowledge into practicality with an abundance of industry collaborations, hands-on and student-centred learning experiences, as well as accredited courses that fall in tandem with the latest prospects of the industry. Accompanied by the support of my mentor, Mr. Azizul, and several other lecturers, I believe that my day of establishing my own venture is conspicuous,” he said.

As of now, Aiman’s journey does not conclude with a degree. His commitment to self-improvement is unshaken. He constantly seeks opportunities to enhance his skills and knowledge by avidly participating in a plethora of online courses to get him prepared for future endeavors. His dedication aligns seamlessly with MSU’s core value of advancing lifelong learning. He embraces and upholds this value very well, as his journey at MSU has not been a short one. He has spent his past seven years cherishing excellence in education and holistic development at MSU since he first attained his Tourism and Management Certificate (SPL).

The Tourism and Management Certificate (SPL) is an effective tool for upskilling and advancing in tourism. The certificate provides increased career opportunities. According to Study Hub (2023), many employers prefer hiring individuals who possess relevant certifications, as it shows they are committed to professional growth and willing to take that extra step towards increasing their skill sets.

Like many pursuing their dreams, Aiman faced challenges, particularly in navigating financial constraints. However, he managed to transform these obstacles into steppingstones with the support of his family. His mother, Dr. Hamidah Mohd Ismail, Head of the APEL Unit at the Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Studies, has intrinsically reinforced his perseverance to always excel in education. Despite these challenges, he cherishes and enjoys the vibrant and inclusive haven at MSU. Countless friends from diverse cultures and on a variety of occasions foster a sense of belonging.

“I have made a lot of friends here, and I am not going to lie to you that a student’s life does demand adaptability across various social circles. Indeed, many memories have been created here with my friends. Sometimes, I would see myself having a visit to MSU every once in a while; just relive those moments,” he stated.

Conveying his messages to all MSUrians, Aiman believes that one’s dreams should not be hindered by challenges, as challenges are ever-existing in nature. The most important thing that one should adhere to is the will to make changes and progress in life. For Aiman, he was awakened by his instincts and determination to thrive in the field of tourism and hospitality, which led him to his success in the completion of his study. The value of lifelong learning shall be one’s personal mantra to foster adaptability and resilience throughout generations. His life as an MSUrian is defined through the rejuvenating experiences and connections he forged on various occasions and exposures.
