The warm smell of the asphalt rises in the air, accompanied by a snarling roar from the 144-cc, 12-horsepower fuel-injected engine. A set of knobby tyres claws at the earth, ready to take down every corner swiftly without any hiccups, dashing through the wind with the speed of a banshee. In the world of motorsport, where speed is king and precision is paramount, Khairulamirin “Rin” Yahaya has established himself as a force to be reckoned with. For someone who started his remarkable motorsport career with a “motard” Kawasaki KLX150 to train, Rin progressively lives his life in the fast lane, determined to master through countless twists and turns while burning the midnight oil.

At just 21 years old, Rin is not only throttling his reputation as a professional motorsport racer. He just recently graduated with a diploma in outdoor recreation from Management and Science University (MSU). For him, the checkered flag is not the only finish line he is constantly aspiring to cross; his graduation has proven both brains and burnouts are the fuel for a champion’s journey.

“The track is my canvas, and academia is my foundation. Balancing both is challenging, but it's a challenge I embrace wholeheartedly,” he said.

Rin, who is currently an esteemed member of the Corpus Haste Ventures (CHV) Racing Team in Selangor, finds himself at the intersection of academia and motorsport, juggling the demands of his professional career and his latest race to excellence with a Bachelor in Outdoor Recreation Management (Hons) at his alma mater.

Rin’s journey in motorsport began at the tender age of 14. What started as a passion soon evolved into a serious commitment as he sparked his reputation in the Asia Talent Cup 2016 selection at Sepang GoKart International Circuit. From that starting point onward, Rin began his journey to conquer the serpentine ribbon of asphalt at various prestigious competitions around the world. In October 2021, he managed to finish in seventh place at the GP S4 Championship in Lombardia. He also made his appearance at the Spanish Supermoto Championship in Albaida, Spain, riding for the Supermotoland Husqvarna Junior Talent Team in June 2021.

On top of that, Rin also engraved his name in history as the first Malaysian to ever make it to the European S4 Class Supermoto Championships. Closer to home, he navigated the twists of the Malaysian Superbike Championship (MSBK) season in 2019 and participated in the Malaysian CubPrix (MCP) in 2018.

Going beyond the expectations of what a professional motorsport racer should become, Rin harbours a dream that transcends the racetrack. Behind those helmets and leathers lies a noble dream of giving back to the community, as he aspires to become a lecturer, aiming to convey his knowledge and priceless experience to the upcoming generations. His dream reflects his compassionate worldview, connoting that passion and ambition know no bounds.

“Becoming a lecturer is my way of giving back to the community. It fuels my passion. I want to share my love for sporting arenas and recreation and inspire others to cherish life achievements and continue their goodwill to make life meaningful,” he added.

Rin envisions a future where he teams up with individuals who share his passion and mindset. Whether it is on the racetrack or in the lecture hall, he is optimistic about the connections he makes and longs to be surrounded by people who understand the thrill of the ride. The presence of his kin and mentors on his graduation day revived his spirit to continue his progressive and impactful journey in both motorsport and academia. Behind Rin’s daring pursuits, his mentors, lecturers, and family are his sources of inspiration.

“It is a relief, and I am incredibly grateful to be blessed with a supportive family and welcoming lecturers at MSU who guided me to traverse this challenging path of life. I grew my circle and worked with a lot of people from various backgrounds during my study. To be honest, I just cannot wait to see myself working with more people with the same common conscience and passion. Therefore, I dedicate my efforts and passion to be shared with others so that we can strenuously work together for betterment,” he said.

Due to his rich experience at his alma mater, Rin finds it difficult to attest to his unforgettable and delightful experiences during his three years of study. Despite his compact schedule in between classes, assignments, and racetrack appearances, his experiences at MSU have been constructive and fulfilling. In a conducive environment, he is obliged to stay true to himself, taking criticisms he faces in his profession as the building blocks towards resilience, adaptability, and self-improvement.

“I have encountered several mishaps in my endeavours. For instance, my dream to be in the European Championship 2020 was hindered due to the pandemic, and I had to attend virtual classes. Subsequently, I also had to undergo a long rehabilitation period due to an incident that happened in the S4 Championship in Albaida. Things just happened. Nonetheless, it never breaks me as there are more delightful experiences here compared to those trivial incidents,’ as he pointed out some challenges he faced in his recent years.

Rin’s definition of success and accomplishments is translated into his impactful actions and mindset. He embraces hard work and determination in life. As he said, “It is okay to adhere to positive principles and ideas that create shared opportunities for others and help you in your success story. Work hard until people see how good you are. You just do you!”
