With a heavy-duty wrench in one hand and a micro-fibre cloth in another, a young man is lost in the world of chrome and asphalt-smeared curves. Surrounded by the furious hum of a 1998cc turbocharged, all-aluminium inline 4-GEMA engine, he looked at several ‘tuner’ rides waiting outside for makeover. The song on his stereo box drops the beats of DJ Shadow’s ‘Six Days’ chorus once used as Tokyo Drift’s soundtrack. He vibes along with it and thinks, “Yes, another day indeed.”
It is just like any other typical day spent by Naim Hashim before. As a graduate with a bachelor’s degree in International Business from Management and Science University (MSU), he sees the establishment of his garage, NH Autoworks, as being mainly driven by his shared passion for cars with his brother. Stronger together, the brothers found solace in the sounds of clunking metals and revving engines with potent horsepowers since young. He started to turn his acquired skills in car maintenance into a stable venture in 2018 from fidgeting around with tools and engine mechanisms at home which significantly improved his experiences in dealing with mechanical parts for all drives including race cars.
“The reason why I started my own workshop was not solely influenced by passion, but it was also a result of my easy-going nature wherein I just love to talk and connect with new people. One of the most important values I learned in setting up good business practices is to nurture ‘trust’ with the customers. It is one thing we do learn in customer servicing practice as well because, at the end of the day, it is through trust that we retain good prospects in businesses.” Naim said as he emphasised the values underpinning his services.
NH Autoworks delivers automobile restoration, maintenance and modification services in Subang Jaya, Selangor. With a strategically located garage, Naim has nonchalantly catered to most of the 4Ps elements in his strategic business plan, with affordable prices offered for his services and products that include a wide range of motor oils, lubricants and spare parts that he procured from high-quality and well-known vendors. Although his current profession is a bit different from the mainstream outcomes with his academic qualification, Naim sees this deviation in a rather positive view.
“Despite my qualification in International Business, I do not limit myself to only mainstream professions which are oftentimes affiliated with international business graduates. Some may emerge strong in the banking industry and stuff, but for me, personally, I am doing what I do best. The knowledge and skills learned at MSU combined with my passion for cars became a powerful motivation. Experience and knowledge integration is definitely something one needs to harness to be successful at what they do,” he explained.
“Sustaining this business in autoworks requires decent leadership skills and a solid team. I believe that I have played my part as a manager and led my business with goodwill. I will always continue to try my best to fulfilling the organisational needs as a whole, whether it is through wages, team support or work-life balance. Seeing how everything is going now, I see the benefits of setting up this garage, mainly in terms of connections built with suppliers, vendors and customers,” he added.
Spending five years of his life as an MSUrian, Naim has been relatively known for his warmness and close connection with his tutors back then. He was actively engaging in various sports clubs at MSU, contributing several medals and glories for the university. Reflecting all the character-building values he developed in his varsity life to his current profession, he provides good business practices and humane services through deliverance to his customers who come from various socio-economic backgrounds.
“To give back to the community is done differently here in my business for I started to offer affordable services in staggered payment packages or instalment modes to those who are in need. I believe that this is one of the ways I can actually help the community to lessen their burden on car maintenance expenditures,” Naim outlined the added value offered through his services.
“Based on my past experiences at MSU, I would say that MSU’s Personal Enrichment Competencies (PEC) courses are considerably one of the university’s signature moves towards professional and soft-skills development. We learned many things beyond what is taught in the mainstream courses or textbooks which eventually emulsified our learning experiences. The outcome of these experiences has allowed me to effectively face today’s challenges,” he reminisced.
Outlining the tips for overall character development, Naim upholds perseverance and goal-oriented endeavours to navigate through the academic journey. He posited that the audacity to try new things and smart decisions are crucial to determining one’s potential. The ‘work hard, work smart, take charge of your own life’ mantra became his daily motivation that led to his dream career today.
