History of Father’s Day

The history of Father's Day dates back over a century and has evolved through various cultural and historical influences. The origins of Father's Day can be traced to the early 20th century, at least historically true for the United States.

The notion of celebrating fatherhood and honouring fathers began in response to the already universally celebrated Mother's Day. A popular figure named Sonora Smart Dodd is often credited with being the sole reason and driving force behind the establishment of Father's Day that we celebrate very popularly to this day. Inspired by the love, sacrifices, dedication and perpetual care shown by her own father, William Jackson Smart, Sonora campaigned for a day to honour fathers.

The first widely remembered and recognized Father's Day celebration took place in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. The date was chosen to coincide with Sonora’s father’s birthday. Her efforts gained momentum, and gradually, the concept of Father's Day spread beyond the United States and gained international recognition.

Different countries adopted their respective dates and customs for celebrating fathers. In many countries, Father's Day is also associated with traditional customs, gift-giving, and family unions filled with laughter and meaningful fellowships.

Recreating Father’s Favourite Recipe

In resonance to that, Che Ku Nur Afiqah binti Che Ku Hashim, a final year culinary student at Management and Science University (MSU), recreated her father’s favourite recipe to express her love and gratitude for all that her father has done and is for her. Afiqah has specifically picked the dish, Ikan Singgang Ala Kelantan, which she confidently professed to be her father’s most favourite dish. Her father’s go-to dish is superficially his comfort food, according to Afiqah. The medical doctor specialising in family medicine is profoundly fond about this dish for his roots from Kelantan.

In the video below, Che Nur Afiqah, explains the ingredients and method of cooking of this very popular dish among the Kelantanese.

Q & A with Che Ku Nur Afiqah

What is the best moment you remember between you and your father?

Every single moment spent with my dad is precious for me. I usually spend a lot of my time with him in his clinic. I help him with the cleaning, opening, and closing of the clinic. I sometimes help him facilitate the patients.

Why did you choose this dish to recreate today?

Because my father loves it so much, and he always asks me to make it for him. The instant I return home after a day on campus, he will ask me to cook for him this dish for dinner. He loves having this with just plain rice. This is also the very first dish he personally taught me to make. He is a good cook. He inspired me to cook and it’s fair to say that he is the reason why I do culinary now. I love his nasi ayam penyet.

Among your father’s advice, which one of them do you remember and follow till now?

My dad used to say that the kitchen is not a place just for cooking but to invent beautiful stories.

What is the difference between other styles of Ikan Singgang and the one you make?

From what I have seen, some add turmeric and serai, but the one I make, ala Kelantan, that is the signature of Kelantan, you would only add one in it: Budu. The rest are not really needed unless you would like to add.

How important is your dad to you in your life?

He is my “nyawa (very breath)” to me. He is my everything. Whatever hurts him, hurts me too.

What is your father’s hobby?

He loves gardening.

How does your dad inspire me?

He is a strong man who loves to study. I want to be as strong as him.

What does a good father mean to you?

A loving, brave, and hard-working person.
