When the COVID-19 pandemic hit worldwide, even the brightest of days felt gloomy and dull. The depth of unspeakable silence within the heart was inexplicable. During that dark and confusing period, classes at universities were done completely online. Students and tutors were unable to meet in person for physical classes. Online arrangements were the only hope. It was challenging for many to adapt to this sudden and unexpected change, but it got better with the passing of time. Two MSUrians who graduated in the recent 31st Convocation of the Management and Science University (MSU) began their undergraduate pursuit at the exact brink of the pandemic. While settling into a new environment—university life is surely different from high school—having to quickly adapt to online classes must have been a totally different game to pull through.

Triumph Over Adversity: A Doctor's Journey Fuelled by Determination and Support

From Loss to Resilience - Embracing Challenges on the Path to Healing

When the pandemic hit, shifting to online classes in the medical field was not a piece of cake. “Imagine learning medical stuff and clinical skills online—it was a challenge,” she admits. Balancing the differences between medical cases in India and Malaysia required extra effort to ace exams. With in-person clinical teachings on pause, virtual discussions and role plays became the new norm. But, props to the dedicated doctors and International Medical School (IMS) staff in Bangalore and Shah Alam who made sure her education was on point.

“Can't thank my parents and friends enough for being my rocks during those crazy times,” she expresses. Finding solace in trusting Allah and His plans, she learned that everything happens for a reason. And even though the journey brought pain and challenges, she embraced the belief that it was all part of a bigger plan.

Group discussions became a game-changer in her learning experience. She dove headfirst into lively case discussions, seminars, and even epic role plays. Mini tests kept her on her toes, with doctors checking her understanding. She formed epic collaborations with classmates and mentors, making sure her knowledge and skills were off the charts—even in the challenging online environment.

When it comes to the support system, her parents deserve the spotlight. "My parents gave their all for me," she exclaims with gratitude. Siblings, educators, mentors, and the closest squad all offered endless support, advice, and prayers. And let's not forget Professor Tan Sri Dr Shukri, who hooked her up with a scholarship throughout her MSU journey in Shah Alam and Bangalore. Now that's what we call support on another level!

Reflecting on her learning experience, she admits it was a total transformation. MSU Shah Alam and MSU Bangalore shaped her into a versatile graduate. Think lifelong friendships, epic connections with lecturers, and the sweet development of killer soft skills. Plus, her time in the International Medical School Student Association (IMSA) in Bangalore, where she rocked the role of President, provided priceless memories.

As the transition from online to in-person classes arrived, challenges emerged. But with the dream team of lecturers, doctors, and friends in her corner, she tackled them head-on. Navigating through various clinical departments, she aced syllabus requirements like a boss. IMS staff, doctors, and classmates formed an unbeatable squad, ensuring a seamless transition.

Her journey is a testament to unwavering determination and support. From loss to healing, she embraced challenges like a true warrior, proving the power of resilience. Her story is pure inspiration, reminding all to keep faith in our dreams and lean on our loved ones when life gets twisty.

A Journey of Triumph: Overcoming Challenges to Inspire Success

From Online Learning to Embracing the Thrill of In-Person Engagement at MSU

On the other hand, shifting from online classes to physical classes for our recent alumna, Tamil Selvi Gunaseelan, a graduate of Hospitality and Tourism Management, was seamless. However, online classes were rather a struggle for her. When it comes to the challenges of online classes during the pandemic, she doesn't hold back.

“The pandemic did present us a number of challenges. From poor internet connections and endless distractions at home to struggling with time management and staying motivated—it was a wild ride,” she spilled.

Despite all that, she found a way to make it work. “Keeping in touch with my lecturer was a lifeline. We had those regular email exchanges and used all the platforms to stay in the loop about any changes to assignments or lectures.”

And let's not forget the goldmine of recorded materials that saved her. Being able to go back to complex topics at her own pace without missing a beat? That's what's up!

Transitioning from online to in-person classes after the pandemic restrictions was a profound feeling for her. “Being back in those real-life classrooms is like a breath of fresh air. The social and communicative aspects of learning were essential for building networks and communication skills. It's about to be an educational experience that's off the charts!” she said.

“Let me tell you, inspiration can strike from all angles during your academic journey. I wanted to level up my knowledge and skills, and being surrounded by accomplished individuals in my field was a game-changer. Plus, the chance to contribute to research and innovation? That fired me up to graduate!” she shared.

Reflecting on the hurdles she faced, she said, “It was tough. There were days when I felt tired, unmotivated, and stressed to the max. But giving up wasn't an option.” She credits her ninja-like time management skills and trust in her own productivity as key players in her success. “Shoutout to my lectures and mentors for having my back,” she added, giving props to her support system.

Creating a zen study space at home was another secret weapon in her arsenal. “Having a designated space to zone in and focus boosted my productivity big time,” she revealed. Staying connected with her classmates and professors on social media was like having a hype squad that kept her motivated and in the know.

Talking about her ride-or-die supporters, she beams with gratitude. “My family, my tight-knit crew, and my academic advisors? They were my squad, my cheerleaders through thick and thin.” Her family's unwavering support, constant encouragement, and financial backing pushed her forward. And her close friends were her partners-in-crime, making the academic journey a lot more fun. Her academic advisors were like Yoda, guiding her through the challenges and molding her into a top-notch graduate.

In the end, Tamil’s journey to graduation is a testament to her resilience, the power of her support system, and her incredible adaptability. Her story is an inspiration, reminding us that with determination, a supportive circle, and the ability to roll with the punches, we can conquer any challenge on our path to success.
