Innovators, researchers, and experts committed to establishing a healthier future by strengthening the healthcare and life sciences frontiers convened at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2023 Advanced Healthcare and Life Sciences International Innovation Awards & Expo (AHLS).

MSU researchers achieved remarkable success at the MTE 2023 Advanced Healthcare and Life Sciences International Innovation Awards & Expo, securing a total of 14 awards: two special awards, six golds, five silvers, and one bronze. They did so with a total of 12 entries. The research areas primarily focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty (1), Good Health and Well-Being (3), Quality Education (4), Affordable and Clean Energy (7), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (9), Reduced Inequalities (10), Sustainable Cities and Communities (11), Responsible Consumption (12), and Climate Action (13).

Researchers from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS), School of Pharmacy (SPH), School of Graduate Studies (SGS), Faculty of Information and Science Engineering (FISE), School of Education and Social Sciences (SESS), Centre for Fundamental Studies (CFS), Centres of Excellence (CoE)MSU iCARE, and MSU Medical Centre (MSUMC).

In addition, various industry partners, including Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Ganofarm Sdn Bhd, Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Curtin University Malaysia, Curtin Biovalley Sdn Bhd, Ganoform Sdn Bhd, Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), and the Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) were involved. On top of that, MSU postgraduate students pursuing a Master in Science (by Research) Biomedicine (MBM) and undergraduates studying for a Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) (BPH) and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) (BBM) also participated in this endeavour.

 

 

The team, led by Fairuz Mohd Nordin (FHLS), received two special awards from the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) and the Macau Invention Association (MIIA), as well as a gold award for their research work on the Module of Eye Health Screening and Assessment (MESrA) – Vision Screening Module for Non Eye Care Practitioner to assist Prevention of Blindness. The team members included Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zaki Awang Isa (CoE-Icare), Dr. Azlindarita @ Aishah Mohd Abdullah (MSUMC), Maliati Mohammad (CFS), Jasmina Annie George (SESS), and Asmaa’ Najihah Mohd Nazri (MBM). They developed a training module for teachers and educated communities in rural areas to facilitate vision screening for underserved children and promote early prevention and intervention for visual impairment.

 

 

Five other golds go to FHLS, FISE, and SGS research projects. The projects are:

MSU Assessment Chart for Children with Special Needs, led by Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zaki Awang Isa (CoE-iCARE) with team members Fairuz Mohd Nordin (FHLS), Kevin Loo Teow Aik (FISE), and Mohamad Khamal Haqqim (MBM);

DiRetina: Smartphone Fundus Imaging for Intelligent Detection of Eye Diseases (Diabetic Retinopathy), led by Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Irsyad Abdullah (FISE) with team members Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zaki Awang Isa (CoE-iCARE); Associate Professor Ts Dr. Safaa Najah Saud Al-Humairi (FISE); Kevin Loo Teow Aik (FISE); Senior Assistant Professor Dr. Lim Tiong Hoo (UTB); Rimuljo Hendradi (UNAIR); and Muhammad Fikhri Abdul Aziz (FISE);

 

 

Synergistic Effect of Ganoderma Lucidum And Clitoria Ternatea Extract on Improvement of Psoriasis Using Rat Model, led by Dr. Mahathir Mohd Uzid (SGS) with team members Muhammad Danial Che Ramli (FHLS), Anita Zara Weinheimer (FHLS), Dr. Poh (Ganofarm), and Nurul Ashikin Razali, a BBM student;

 

 

and Liberia Coffee Peel Yoghurt Drink for Hypercholesterolaemia Reduction, led by Dr. Azrina Zainal Abidin (FHLS) with team members Dr. Santhra Segaran Balan (FHLS), Associate Professor Dr. Hasnah Bahri (UPM), Nor Elianis Nor Khairani (BBM), and Nor Azeera Mohd Ali (FHLS).

 

 

Five silver awards were secured: four from FHLS and one from SPH. They are:

The project titled GCMS Profiling, Formulation Characterization, and Molecular Docking of Citrus Sinensis Peels Extract Loaded Lotion for Photoprotection, led by Dr. Ng Chean Hui (SPH) has received the bronze award. The project's team members include Thong Poh Yen (MBM), Mohamad Nizam Abdul Ghani (SPH), Associate Professor Dr. Kue Chin Siang (FHLS), Samer Al-Dhalli (USM), Dr. Kiew Siaw Fui from Curtin Biovalley, and Dr. John Lau Sie Yon from Curtin University.
