The third edition of Congress of Optometry and Vision Research 2023 was organised by MSU’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) Department of Optometry and Vision Science (DOVS) together with Centre of Excellence for Vision and Eyecare (MSU-iCARE), in conjunction with the MSU Health Science Week 2023. Themed ‘Role of Vision Care Professionals in Supporting United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goal’, this congress convened prominent academic scientists, researchers, and research scholars, providing them with a forum to exchange experiences and showcase their discoveries in the realm of Optometry and Visual Science.  

 

 

Officiating and delivering the welcoming address was MSU President Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

“Strive to become holistic, balanced, and well-rounded optometrists. At our university, we wholeheartedly embrace the values of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in every aspect of our teaching and learning. It is essential to recognize that over 1.1 billion people suffer from vision loss simply due to a lack of access to eye care services. This predominantly affects young girls, women, and school children, especially those in rural areas. Vision loss carries a significant economic burden, with estimates indicating up to 411 billion in costs, as reported by the World Economic Forum. This congress serves as a critical step toward addressing this issue and finding solutions. I also want to extend my congratulations and gratitude to all the new partnerships we are forging today, which will contribute to the betterment of our nation.”

Also present in the officiation ceremony were Professor Dr. Indang Ariati Ariffin, Vice President for Research and International Affairs; Associate Professor Dr. Sairah Abdul Karim, Dean of FHLS; Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zaki Awang Isa, Director of Centre of Excellence, Vision and Eyecare.

The keynote speaker for the COVR was Professor Niall Strang from Glasgow Caledonia University, UK, who delivered a talk titled 'The Role of Eye Health Care in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

 

 

Professor Niall Strang emphasized that optical vision undoubtedly enhances our quality of life and can ultimately drive a nation's economy, as this congress aimed at exploring strategies for enhancing vision. He urged participants to grasp the significance of eye care, understand the nature of their profession, and strive to develop their skills to the highest level.

During this congress, three Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged. These agreements included partnerships with G&A Retails Sdn Bhd, represented by Grace Gan; Quin Global Optometry Sdn Bhd represented by Mohd Kamal Haqqim and Adi Putra; and Dr. D.Y. Patil Institute of Optometry and Visual Sciences of India represented by Dr. Vishal Madan.

 

 

This two-day congress encompassed various plenary lectures by distinguished local and international speakers. The topics include:

Subhadeep Das, a lecturer and research coordinator at FHLS moderated the forum on the Role of Optometry Profession in supporting the United Nations' Sustainability Development Goals for Decent Work and Economic Growth, with panelists including Professor Niall Strang, Dr. Abishek Mandal, and Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Zaki Awang Isa.
