Digital transformation and invention are indispensable for remaining relevant and profitable in this world progressively fuelled by technology, such as the soaring prominence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), for instance. The accountability for both the issue and its countermeasure rests in our hands, empowering us to make well-informed decisions to produce a better world.

Management and Science University (MSU) and the Malaysia-Japan Relation Association hosted the Malaysia-Japan Digital Transformation and Innovation Seminar 2023, with a mission to bolster relations between Malaysia and Japan. The seminar concentrated on providing an avenue for knowledge-sharing and cutting-edge exchanges on current trends carrying the themes of digitalisation, technology, and innovation.

Launching the enriching seminar was Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications and Digital, Malaysia, in the presence of Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid, President of MSU; His Excellency, Takashi Katsuhiko, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia; Hiromitsu Narukama, Managing Director of Mitsui Company Limited; Hiroshi Imai, Managing Director of Sony Network Communications Incorporated; Tsubasa Nakawaza, Managing Director of Kintone South East Asia Sdn Bhd; and Professor Puan Sri Datuk Dr. Junainah Abdul Hamid, Vice Chancellor of MSU.

 

 

 

“As a Premier Digital Technology Initiative (PDTI) institution, we are collaborating to enhance upcoming talent development for the digital economy and technology. Hopefully, with our collaboration with Mitsui and Sony, we will be able to address the skill and technology gap for future nation-building. MSU aspires to become one of the centres that promote the technological and research ecosystem between Malaysia and Japan, as well as to support our two countries’ strong bilateral connection. Today, the students of MSU, Malaysia’s future, and hope, will be bridging the future of the Malaysia-Japan partnership," said Professor Dr. Mohd Shukri in his introductory remarks.

 

 

In his officiating speech, Honourable Minister Fahmi Fadzil accentuated the profound impact of global collaborations in confronting challenges and fortifying economic growth.

“As we witness the ever-evolving landscape of academia, it is reassuring to see MSU’s commitment to nurturing balanced, holistic, and well-rounded individuals, equipping them not only with knowledge but also with the skills and mindset required to thrive in the 21st century. I express my hope that MSU, through its impactful research and commercialisation collaborations with Japanese industry players, will play a commendable role in furthering our nation’s close relationship with Japan. This collaboration is not just about the exchange of knowledge; it is about co-creating solutions that address real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to economic growth.”

 

 

In an endeavour to enrich and strengthen collaborative efforts in the areas of digital transformation and innovation, MSU exchanged Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Mitsui Company Limited, received by Hiromitse Narukama; Sony Network Communications Incorporated, by Hiroshi Iman; and Kintone South East Asia Sdn Bhd, by Tsubasa Nakazawa.

 

 

The first segment of the seminar commenced with an intriguing exchange of expertise and communication infrastructure to ensure the uninterrupted development of the digital industries in both countries.

Mohd Nazrol Marzuke, the Undersecretary of Infrastructure and Application Division, Ministry of Communications and Digital delved deeply into the realm of Digital Connectivity for Digital Transformation & Innovation in Malaysia. Nazrol’s pointers encompassed various connectivity spectrums from the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) Plan, 5G Network Implementation, Malaysia’s Network Infrastructure Sharing, Malaysia Smart City Framework, and Malaysia National AI Roadmap.

 

 

Highlighting Japan’s ICT Policy towards Digital Transformation was Shiori Komori, Deputy Director, International Digital Infrastructure Promotion Division Global Strategy Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Japan. Shiori shed light on the Digital Garden City Nation Initiative, 5G Implementation, Experience, Overall Business, Key Features of Beyond 5G/6G, Vision of Beyond 5G Network Architecture, Research and Development Challenges in Beyond 5G/6G, Open RAN, Initiatives to promote 5G and Open RAN, Global Promotion Activities, and Cooperation between ASEAN Member States and Japan.

 

 

Along with the rest, a forum titled Forthcoming Digital Transformation in Malaysia and Japan called attention to an advancing discussion on technology and innovation towards digital transformation. Ts Dr. Noor Afiza Mat Razali, the visiting professor at MSU, moderated the forum.

 

 

The esteemed panellists were Hiroshi Imai; Dr. Helina Eian Yuet Lan, the Chairman, Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Branch, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and Managing Director of Accel Graphic System Sdn Bhd; and Professor Dr. Abdul Jalil Ghazali, Senior Vice President for Industry Linkages & Entrepreneurship of MSU.

In addition to the aforementioned, exhibition booths featuring Mitsui Company Limited, Sony Network Communications Incorporated, Kintone South East Asia Sdn Bhd, and the University’s SDG-based projects and innovative products, along with award-winning research projects, were showcased for MSUrians and industries to explore.
