First aid, a one-time, short-term treatment, has an intriguing history of tracing way back to early civilisations: Ancient Egypt, Greece, the Roman Army, Napoleon’s Ambulance Corps, Africa, Combat Drowning, Franco-Prussian, and British Army.

Meaning the difference between life and death, the significance of first aid is greatly imposed via Personal Enrichment Competency (PEC) 800, a subject offered to every student across the campus, regardless of their faculties and courses, a skillset one has to be well-versed in.

Bringing the essentiality of first aid to the wider and next generation is the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) via the School Community First Aider Project (SCFAR). Intending to bridge the gap between the health care profession and interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programmes, SCFAR is targeted at school children to instill life-saving skills as they grow up in an appealing and thought-provoking way, ensuring an enriching learning experience.

Officiating the soft launch was MSU President, Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

Encompassing diverse details with basic health and first aid components, the students from FHLS exhibited their programmes and their core via interactive booth presentation; Musculoskeletal Injuries First Aid (Bandaging, Wound Management and Hit Stroke Management) by Diploma in Medical Science and Health, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) by Bachelor in Cardiovascular Technology (Hons), Hand Washing/Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) by Diploma in Nursing and Bachelor in Nursing (Hons), Back Pain First Aid by Diploma in Physiotherapy, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Body Fat Assessment by Bachelor in Nutrition (Hons), Eye checkup by Bachelor of Optometry (Hons), Sports Taping & Massage by Diploma in Sport Science and ‘Keep Food Safe! Food Safety Basics’ by Bachelor in Food Service Technology (Hons).
